Day of the Dead in a Mexican cemetery (2025) (Engl / Spn)

This is my second post of 2025 related to the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. Last year I shared some photos from a visit to this same cemetery, located in the San Jerónimo Tepetlacalco neighborhood of Tlalnepantla de Baz, in the State of Mexico. Just like last year, this year the graves were also cleaned and decorated, and some even had offerings for the deceased. As I mentioned, although these photos are mine, they weren't taken by me, but by one of my sisters, who visited this place on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

> Esta es mi segunda publicación de este año 2025, relacionada con la celebración del Día de Muertos en México. El año pasado les compartí algunas fotos de una visita a este mismo cementerio, ubicado en la Colonia San Jerónimo Tepetlacalco, Tlalnepantla de Baz, en Estado de México. Al igual que el año pasado, este año las tumbas también fueron limpiadas y adornadas, e incluso algunas tenían ofrendas a los difuntos. Como ya mencioné, estas fotos aunque son de mi propiedad, no fueron tomadas por mí, sino por una de mis hermanas, quien visitó este lugar, el pasado día domingo 2 de Noviembre 2025.

I'm struck by how complex and different death is perceived in Mexico (compared to the rest of the Christian world). One expression of this is the way graves are maintained and adorned, especially for this holiday. It's worth noting that virtually all the graves were in good condition, as it's a small cemetery, and I imagine that almost all the deceased buried there still have families who visit and honor them.

> Me sorprende lo compleja y diferente que es concebida la muerte en México, (en comparación al resto del mundo cristiano), siendo una expresión de esta concepción, la forma en que las tumbas son mantenidas, y adornadas especialmente para esta festividad. Cabe señalar que prácticamente la totalidad de las tumbas estaban en buen estado, ya que es un panteón pequeño, y supongo que casi todos los difuntos que están ahí, aún tienen familias que les visitan y les honran.

This particular tomb is beautiful. Approximately seven people rest there, so I assume it belongs to the same family. You can see it has an arch of flowers and papel picado (cut paper decorations), which, according to tradition, serves as a portal between the world of the living and the dead. The decorations of La Katrina and La Katrino are beautiful and give it a special touch. There are also many marigolds (Tagetes erecta), which are used to guide the souls to this world and then back again. If you look closely, you'll see bananas, apples, guavas, watermelon, tangerines, and so on, as well as sodas, water, some liquor, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), chocolate, and other items. There are also small bowls of salt, which the dead use to purify themselves and recharge their energy, and water, which they use to quench their thirst. There are also other flowers and some small skulls that I think are decorative, not made of sugar. There are many candles or votive candles that light the way for the deceased and give them light.

> Esta tumba en particular me parece hermosa. En ella, descansan aproximadamente 7 personas, por lo que supongo pertenece a un mismo grupo familiar. Se puede observar que tiene un arco de flores y papel picado, que, según la creencia, sirve de portal entre el mundo de los vivos y los muertos. Son hermosas las decoraciones de la Katrina y el Katrino, que le dan un toque especial. También tiene muchas flores de cempasúchil (Tagetes erecta), las cuales sirven para marcar el camino a las almas, para que puedan llegar a esta realidad y luego regresar a su mundo. Si detallan bien, verán bananas, manzanas, guayabas, sandía, mandarinas, etc., así como sodas, agua, algo de licor, pan de muerto, chocolate, etc. También hay pequeños cuencos con sal, que sirve para que los muertos se purifiquen y también recarguen energías, y agua, que les sirve para calmar la sed. También hay otras flores y unas calaveritas que creo no son de azúcar, sino de adorno. Hay muchas velas o veladoras, que alumbran el camino de los difuntos y les dan luz.

The other graves are also beautifully decorated, always with marigolds, papel picado (cut paper decorations) to brighten the atmosphere, and bouquets of flowers. I believe they all once had candles, though these were later removed. Some also have offerings of fruit, water, salt, and pan de muerto (bread of the dead). Others have live plants growing around them. In any case, the love, respect, and care that the families give to these sacred spaces is remarkable.

> Las otras tumbas también están bellamente decoradas, siempre con flores de cempasúchil, papel picado para decorar y alegrar el ambiente y ramos de flores. Creo que todas en un momento tuvieron veladoras, aunque luego fueron retiradas. También algunas tienen ofrendas de frutas, agua, sal y pan de muerto. Hay otras con plantas vivas, que crecen alrededor de ellas. En todo caso es notable el amor, respeto y cuidado que los familiares brindan a estos espacios consagrados.

It's beautiful to see how cemeteries in Mexico are generally respected and well-maintained spaces, visited by the families of the deceased with love and the hope of an annual reunion. It's admirable and very enriching from a cultural perspective.

> Es hermoso ver, cómo los panteones en México, son por lo general, espacios respetados y cuidados, que son visitados por los familiares de los difuntos, con un sentimiento de amor y con la esperanza de un reencuentro anual. Es admirable y muy enriquecedor desde el punto de vista cultural.
