I Have been a big fan of Henry Moore since 2008 when I went to New York City Botanical Gardens to see his work Moore in America. When I learned that he lived in the small village, of Perry Green, north of London I knew I wanted to go there some day.

Buildings
Let me take you around the place. There are many buildings on the 70 acres, some you could go in, some you can look into and some you can see the outside- The house, which is called Hoglands, The Aisled Barn, the Plastic Studio, the Top Studio, the Boune Maquette Studio, the Summer house, the Yellow Brink Studio, and the Henry Moore Archive.

In addition to these buildings there is also a visitor's center with a gift shop and cafe. The food was pretty good.

Hoglands
In 1940 Henry and his wife, Irena, were living in London. Henry was working as a war artist and their home was damaged during the Blitz. They decide to move out of London and moved 27 miles north to Hertfordshire and made Hoglands their home. Their daughter Mary was born in 1946.
For an extra £6 you can tour the house, which I did. No pictures are allowed. A couple of things stood out to me. Henry was a collector, he had a lot art and artifacts from all over the world. At Cambridge I took a class called European Art Collectors and we talked about cabinets of curiosities. Henry had a house of curiosities. Thinking about it...so did Rembrandt, in his house in Amsterdam.
The other thing was the great greenhouse right off the back of the house and the garden.
Aisled Barn
The Aisled Barn is a air conditioned building that is where the tapestries are displayed. Henry was a prolific drawer. One of his favorite subjects was his sheep. There is even a book with just his sheep drawings. As I mentioned before he was a war artist in WWII, he drew people sheltering in the London underground and one of these drawings was made into a tapestry.
The tapestries are amazing fiber art of about 8 of his drawings and sketches. Incredible!

Here is a tapestry of one his underground drawing/watercolor. It is hard to express how impressive these tapestries are. They produced in 1950 by Dovecot studios in Scotland, between 197101974 by Brose Patrick studio and woven between 1976-1986 at West Dean College in Sussex.
