Feathered Friday - A Roach, a Thief and a Chipper

Here are a few sightings for this #featheredfriday

P1011527 copy.jpg Who knew that nuthatches liked to eat roaches?

P1011528 copy.jpg I whipped my camera up as I saw this nuthatch about to pounce on something.

P1011529 copy.jpg The roach should have stayed in the sewers, I just hope it doesn't taste terrible for the little nuthatch.

P1011543-Enhanced-NR copy.jpg I'm sure this redwing female would have loved to feed a roach to her chicks.

P1011541-Enhanced-NR copy.jpg She stormed off to look for a cicada instead.

P1011570-Enhanced-NR copy.jpg Here husband is looking at a potential threat.

P1011318 copy.jpg It is a terrible thief, a copper headed cowbird. These guys like to throw eggs out of other bird's nests and lay their own in there so they don't have to raise their own chicks.

P1011545-Enhanced-NR copy.jpg This male house sparrow is on the lookout for threats too. He is mostly competing with starlings for nests on people's houses.

P1011623-Enhanced-NR copy.jpg Farther out in the forest the chipping sparrows are busy raising their young. This mother is looking at her fledgling on the grass below.

P1011706 copy.jpg The fledgling is quite tame, you could easily catch them with your hand. I didn't want to disturb them though as it is just learning how to hop around in grass and can only fly awkwardly and slowly with lots of flapping.
