Fungi Friday - Chlorophyllum molybdites

After large summer storms quite a few large white mushrooms are growing for this #fungifriday

1000001699.jpg I noticed a huge ring of white mushrooms and went to inspect them. Look at this thing it is almost perfectly round.

1000001700.jpg I was hoping its gills would be pink then it would have been an edible Agaricus campestris and I would have had a huge haul for a meal.

1000001702.jpg It's hard to tell from the photo but these gills range from white to greenish. Thus it is the green vomiter mushroom.

1000001701.jpg They often form large fairy rings. My daughter loved walking around them shouting mushrooms mushrooms!

1000001695.jpg Their Latin name is Chlorophyllum molybdites and they are one of the most commonly eaten poisonous mushrooms in North America because people think they are meadow mushrooms.

1000001696.jpg I found a better example of one later where you can see the green on the gills.

1000001698.jpg It's a faint grayish green.

1000001697.jpg So to avoid a terrible stomach ache be sure to make sure the gills are pink or brown on large white mushrooms with a stem ring. If you eat one of these you have such a bad stomach ache you need to go to the hospital to get your stomach pumped. Then you also end up vomiting quite a bit hence a common name of green vomiter lol.

1000001704.jpg Later on we found a log completely infested by turkeytail a nice medicinal mushroom.

1000001703.jpg Soon this thing will be completely covered. You can make quite a few tinctures out of this amount. It requires boiling then soaking in alcohol to extract the cancer killing compounds as a tincture. Or you could just boil them with tea to get a hint of the medicinal qualities.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
