Recently I have been into this spree of horror movies all because I have been waiting for the new Conjuring movie and landed again on "The Others (2001)" I really like this movie but being honest I need to watched it again to have the ideas fresh in my mind and now I just remember the reason why I like it, this movie messed with my head in an unexpected way. Nicole Kidman carries the whole damn thing on her shoulders, she is one those actresses that always give a good performance in every role she get. Nicole Kidman plays Grace Stewarts a mother of two kids and owner of a house that apparently is hunted, she with her family are fighting against those presence that are torment them but when the movie is advancing your start noticing that things are not what they look like since the opening scene things are weird you can see three servants showing up at Grace house like her new servants but she confront one of them because she did write a letter and try to send it to the newspaper for the announcement but mailman never took her letter, since that moment the movie show you that thing are going to be interesting.

I like the way how everything looks dark but not so creepy to, the feeling is that theres so many hidden things that are going to be shown passing the time and there is one revelation, Grace kids Anne and Nicholas never go out of the house, the reason? apparently they have this rare condition where can´t be exposed to sunlight, they break out in blisters and start suffocating which sounds made up but you buy it. Grace has all these weird rules about keeping doors locked, no light can get in anywhere and everything has to be done in very specific ways, at first you think she's just this overprotective mom dealing with her kids medical problems but theres definitely something darker happening underneath. You also think that maybe because Grace now is a single mother because her husband went to war a year has passed since the war end but she doesn´t know anything about him, that situation can make a woman more overprotective definitely but she looks in certain point like a crazy woman with crazy ideas.

Things that really make me think is the way Grace treats her children, she is a good mother no one can deny that but in certain moments she is more of punisher and with the supernatural events that start to happen things are getting worst, specially with her daughter Anne that keep talking about this boy named Victor and an old woman she sees in the house, Grace truly believe that her daughter is making stories and punishes her for lying creating this awful tension between mother and daughter. The way Grace treats her kids is both loving and harsh at the same time, you can see how her fear for their safety has turned into this obsessive need to control everything they do, she reads them these dark Bible stories about children going to limbo if they tell lies and makes them study in separate rooms if they misbehave but her son Nicholas suffers the most because he does believe in ghost and the house work as an individual being creating this feat in the kid and more when things start happening like doors opening by themselves and piano music playing when no ones there, indeed is scary but apparently the servants knows why that is happening but Grace get no response. Theres a moment when we finally met Grace husband but when he arrived at his house things are not like it suppose to be, a couple that has been separated by war, she is waiting for him with her kids, they are really happy because her husband and father is back but he seems different, almost like they are not there, so in that precisely moment your brain start working and thinking that probably the director is giving you hints of what could really be happening with this family. All the production in this movie was well thought, since the mansion where is develop the story, see all the rooms, all those species that can look comfy and creepy at the same time, the clothe that is always important to represent the time were this story in taking place, the acting both the kids and the adults are great, its all awesome. Director Almodobar, he really knows how to create this suspense environment, he didn´t play with the classic jump scares scenes or brought the infamous horror of many horror movies, not he was constructing a story, step by step, making you believe in what he was presenting and suddenly the scares came and take you by surprise.

It´s really impressive that this movie didn´t come from a bestseller is all the directors imagination and that makes every moment fell fresh and unpredictable. They way Amenabar plays with your mind, giving you scenes where you truly believe in something and then twisted everything. In this movie heroes and villains doesn´t exist and I mention this because people could think that probably Grace and her kids are the good ones but they are not neither the good or bad ones, and that is fascinating, sometimes a movie doesn´t need jump scare, gore, blood to be scary, sometimes a psychological horror is more disturbing for the most simple reason, your mind is the more powerful machine and if its manage to don´t understands what is seeing and work hard to have true, that true can be more painful and heartbreaking and that is what happen with this movie.
Well, I can end this post saying that this is one of the most clever horror movies ever made, The Others is all a rollercoaster but a really good one, starting when you know that the kids are sick, then the mother being so overprotecting, people appearing in the house doing rituals, then the supernatural events like the doors opening by themselves, a woman and a boy that only Grace daughter can see and as the cherry in top of the cake the return of Grace husband but treating them like they don´t exist, all those events work together in perfect synchrony, make you believe that the house is hunted, that the father doesn´t love them anymore and that Grace and her family are cursed but the reality is more painful, here comes the plot twist of this story because Grace and her children are no longer in this world and boom that blow my mind, just perfect, unexpected and magical revelation, for that reason you have to watch this and pretty sure I will watch again too.
