Finding resellable items is the foundation of any successful reselling business. While everyone knows about the obvious sources like big thrift Stores or eBay, But some of the best opportunities are often overlooked. Here are five hidden places where I consistently find items that sell well:
Local Thrift Stores – The smaller, independent thrift stores can be a goldmine. Big Store tend to cycle through inventory quickly, but local shops often receive donations that haven’t been priced or categorized by experienced staff. Take your time browsing, especially in sections like Toys, Electronics, and Clothing.
Storage Unit Auctions – This one is likely my favorite, When storage units are abandoned, everything inside is up for grabs. Some units look like junk at first glance ( Most are ), but there’s often hidden value in electronics, collectibles, or Video Games. It’s worth attending auctions in person or online and having a quick method to evaluate potential profits. One rule is to only bid on what you can see ( most times that is nothing so this rule sucks)
Garage Sales & Estate Sales – These are perfect for bargains if you know what to look for. People often sell items for far less than they’re worth just to clear space. Tip: Arrive early for the best picks, and don’t be afraid to negotiate. These are most limited to the fact you can only go during the warmer weather.
Online Marketplaces – Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, and local buy/sell/trade groups can have incredible deals if you act fast. I regularly find items that I can flip on eBay or Poshmark for 3–5x the purchase price. The key is to set up alerts for items you’re targeting and check them daily.
Local Liquidation & Clearance Stores – Sometimes you can find brand-new products at a fraction of retail cost. Electronics, home goods, and small appliances often sell for great margins if you know what’s in demand. This is great for clothing and end of season items that you don't mind holding for more profit but remeber even Christmas sells all year.
Pro Tip: Keep a running checklist of the types of items you’re hunting and track what sells best. The more familiar you are with high-demand items, the faster you’ll spot a hidden gem. With consistency and patience, even the most overlooked places can turn into profitable inventory sources.
