Gramel the Hunger's Triple Threat Terror

@slimeyph · 2025-06-04 21:56 · splinterlands

Cover.png Gramel the Hunger is one of those cards that looks weird at first but starts to make sense the more you try it. He is the first unit in 7 years of Splinterlands to gain all the attack types. His stats aren’t the best, but when used right, he can apply pressure across the board without getting hit himself. This is especially true once you've tried using him in max level, with all his increased stats and abilities available.

Lore

“It wears your face. It speaks with your voice. And when it claims its next victim, it’ll eat them with your mouth.”

Portia Nyr summoned Gramel the Hunger and its arcane skinwalkers from the Plane of Chaos to serve the Conclave Arcana. But in her boundless ambition and pride, she mistook dominion for submission.

Stats

Gramel the Hunger.jpg

Gramel the Hunger is a strong and useful attacker that can adapt in many lineups thanks to his triple attack types. He isn't a frontliner or a tank but he can chip away from the back when protected properly. I think pairing him with units that boosts his attacks can make him a real threat especially if you keep him protected the whole match. Archons that gives additional effects to attacks are also really good with him like Nidhoggr's Blasts and Lorkus's Life Leech (and in Wild Ranked Format, Waka Spiritblade's Poison).

Abilities

Icon Name Description
Charge.png Charge Units with Charge may attack from any position and will target the enemy Unit in the first position.
inspire.png is a match because this ability boosts Gramel’s melee strength, making each Charge attack deal more damage.
Thorns.png is a counter because this punishes melee attackers like Gramel the Hunger by reflecting some damage every time he strikes.
Scattershot.png Scattershot Ranged and Magic attacks hit a random enemy target.
Blast.png is a match because Scattershot targets randomly, Blast adds extra value by dealing area damage to clustered enemies.
Silence.png is a counter because abilities like Silence and Headwinds reduces Gramel the Hunger's Scattershot attacks reducing its effectiveness.
Relentless Strike.png Relentless Strike Attacks deal true damage. +1 damage if the target has Void, Shield or Forcefield.
Up Close and Personal.png is a match because, usually, when there's Up Close & Personal rule on that battle, you and your enemies prefer using units with Shield in order to reduce incoming attacks since players are sure that melee attacks will come. This gives Gramel the Hunger an advantage by not only ignoring Shield but also gaining extra damage when attacking units with Shield.
Dodge.png is a counter because two of Gramel the Hunger's attacks can miss. This ability increases the chance of avoiding Gramel’s attacks altogether, making his true damage less reliable.
Shapeshift.png Shapeshift Treated as all bloodlines.
Bloodline Tribute.png is a match because Gramel the Hunger can be targetted by any of your units with Bloodline Tribute since this ability acts as if he has all the Bloodlines.
back to basics.png is a counter because this rule removes the effect of Shapeshift and other abilities. Archon Bloodline-specific abilities through Bloodline Dominion shall not take effect on this unit unless that Archon has a Fiend Bloodline.
Camouflage.png Camouflage This Unit cannot be directly targeted for attacks unless it's in the first position.
Super Sneak.png is a match because during this rule, you can safely position Gramel the Hunger on the farthest position. Since he cannot be targetted by attacks like units with Sneak that is given by this rule, he'll have a good time attacking enemy units from a safe distance.
Reveal.png is a counter because it cancels Camouflage completely, making Gramel targetable again.

Good Rules to Consider

Icon Name Reason
Equal Opportunity.png Equal Opportunity All units have Opportunity (targets the enemy unit with the least health).
Just like with Super Sneak, with Gramel the Hunger's Camouflage, he avoids being targetted even when all units have Opportunity.
Explosive Weaponry.png Explosive Weaponry All units have Blast (deals an additional 50% damage to units adjacent to the target, rounded up).
Multiple attack types means multiple chances for Blast damage, especially with Relentless Strike. Each attack does their own Blast attack so Gramel the Hunger does 3 Blasts each round on his own.
Fog of War.png Fog of War Units lose the Sneak and Snipe abilities.
Gramel the Hunger's Charge and Scattershot is unaffected in Fog of War giving you all the benefits of the rule without any down sides.

Bad Rules to Think Twice

Icon Name Reason
Keep Your Distance.png Keep Your Distance Units with Melee attack may not be used in battles.
Unlike Wands Out rule, when there's a rule that stops you from using a certain attack, Gramel will also not be allowed like in Broken Arrows rule or Lost Magic rule.
Briar Patch.png Briar Patch All units have Thorns (returns 2 damage to attacker when hit by a melee attack)
Since all units have Thorns, every attack of Gramel the Hunger inflicts damage back to him.
Armored Up.png Armored Up All Units have 2 Armor in addition to their normal Armor stat.
Wihle still completely usable, this still hinders Gramel the Hunger's attacks since two of his three attacks can be blocked by armor. This is especially problematic in lower levels since Gramel the Hunger does not have high attacks.

Battle

Battle.PNG Link to battle

I quickly picked up Nidhoggr with Gramel the Hunger as my main combo when I saw Holy Protection rule. This combo of Nidhoggr's Blast and Gramel the Hunger's multi Scattershot attacks can quickly remove the Divine Shield form my enemy's team giving me an insane advantage. It doesn't matter if they use Taunt units because Scattershot ignores it making Gramel the Hunger a really good unit to use Blast with. While I had issues with the enemy's Repair, I still won by round 5 due to the hard to counter multi-attack type of Gramel the Hunger.
