Depending on the time of day you visit them, many places can offer you a totally different perspective. That's how it was when, on my trip to Barcelona, Spain, a few years ago, I had the opportunity to walk along the famous Paseo de Gracia (Passeig de Gràcia in Catalan) at night.
Dependiendo de la hora en que los visites, muchos lugares pueden ofrecerte una perspectiva totalmente diferente. Así fue cuando en mi viaje a Barcelona, España, hace unos años, tuve la oportunidad de caminar por el famoso Paseo de Gracia (Passeig de Gràcia en catalán) por la noche.

This tour happened largely thanks to my host in the city, my friend Nubi. She had been living there for a few years, is an architect, and was studying a university specialization in lighting, so she wanted to show me how many of the magnificent buildings there look at night.
Que este paseo se diera tuvo mucho que ver con mi anfitriona en la ciudad, mi amiga Nubi. Ella tenía unos años viviendo allí, es arquitecto y estaba cursando una especialización en la universidad sobre iluminación, entonces quería mostrarme cómo se veían muchos de los magníficos edificios que hay allí de noche.
After spending the afternoon on the coast, we arrived at Paseo de Gracia by subway around 9:00 pm and began to explore it. This is a wide, very elegant avenue where you can see famous works of modernist architecture, such as La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, both by Antoni Gaudí.
Después de pasar la tarde en la costa, llegamos al Paseo de Gracia en metro alrededor de las 9:00 pm y comenzamos a explorarlo. Esta es una avenida amplia, muy elegante, donde puedes apreciar obras famosas de la arquitectura modernista, como La Pedrera y la Casa Batlló, ambas de Antoni Gaudí.

This building was constructed on top of another that had been there previously. It was a private house project and was completed in 1907. Gaudí had complete freedom to create whatever he wanted, and as the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism, he did not disappoint, it is truly striking.
Esta edificación se construyó sobre otra que había allí, era un proyecto de casa particular y se terminó en 1907. Gaudí tuvo libertad para crear lo que quisiera, y como máximo exponente del modernismo catalán, no defraudó, es realmente impresionante.
The facade features many elements alluding to nature, something that Gaudí liked to add to his works. To see the interior, you can buy tickets and take a guided tour. As it was closed when we visited, we settled for posing in front of it.
En la fachada se pueden observar muchos elementos alusivos a la naturaleza, algo que a Gaudí le gustaba añadir a sus obras. Para verla por dentro se pueden comprar las entradas y hacer la visita guiada. Como estaba cerrada a la hora en que fuimos, nos conformamos con posar frente a ella.
On the luxurious Paseo de Gracia, apart from the architecture and the big-name fashion stores, every detail is meticulously cared for, and every corner is worth photographing. For example, the benches have a curved design, covered with mosaics, and above them is an iron structure with beautiful figures holding up the streetlights.
En el lujoso Paseo de Gracia, aparte de la arquitectura y las tiendas de grandes firmas de la moda, todos los detalles están muy bien cuidados, cualquier rincón es digno de fotografiar. Por ejemplo, los bancos tienen un diseño curvo, están cubiertos de mosaicos, y sobre ellos, hay una estructura de hierro con hermosas figuras que sostienen las farolas.
We continue our walk and further on we come across another of Gaudí's iconic works, Casa Milà, popularly known as La Pedrera.
Continuamos nuestro paseo y más adelante nos encontramos con otra de las obras emblemáticas de Gaudí, la Casa Milà, conocida popularmente como La Pedrera.
This building was completed in 1912 and was the last civil engineering project by this renowned architect. People nicknamed it La Pedrera (The Quarry) because stone was used for its facade and balconies.
Esta edificación fue terminada en 1912 y fue la última obra civil de este destacado arquitecto. La gente la apodó La Pedrera porque se utilizó piedra para su fachada y balcones.
This was also a private residential project, currently part of which is housing and the other part is a cultural center.
Este también fue un proyecto residencial privado, actualmente una parte es de viviendas y la otra es un centro cultural.
You can also buy tickets for a guided tour here. According to what I've read, it's one of the most visited places in Barcelona, and from its terrace you can see another of Gaudí's magnificent works: La Sagrada Familia. Both Casa Batlló and La Pedrera have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Aquí también se pueden comprar boletos para un tour guiado. Según leí es uno de los lugares más visitados de Barcelona, y desde su terraza se puede contemplar otra obra grandiosa de Gaudí: La Sagrada Familia. Tanto la Casa Batlló como La Pedrera fueron declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.
Our night stroll along Paseo de Gracia ended with a little hydration, drinking water from some old drinking fountains that are available there for people to use.
Nuestro paseo nocturno por el Paseo de Gracia terminó con un poco de hidratación, tomando agua de unos bebederos antiguos que están disponibles allí para la gente.
A few days later, I returned to this grand avenue during the day, and it seemed like a different place altogether. It was definitely a great idea to visit at night and see how it looked with the lights on. I hope you found this tour interesting, until the next #tbt!
