Magical realism is a literary movement of the mid-twentieth century that is characterized by the narration of unusual, fantastic and irrational events in a realistic context.

The term was coined in 1925 by the German art critic and historian Franz Roh in his book Nach Expressionismus: Magischer Realismus: Probleme der neusten europäischen Malerei (Post-Impressionism: the problems of the new European painting) to describe a pictorial movement that incorporates magical aspects to reality.
