The biggest obstacle of all - A personal reflection

@soulpoetry · 2025-07-19 00:00 · Reflections

Many times one thinks that life is full of experiences and circumstances that bind us, compromise us and limit us, but over the years one can come -if you look carefully- to the conclusion that it is not life that limits us, nor are the circumstances, but it is something much deeper, much less obvious to most of us.

And what is it that limits us?

We can give many names to the obstacles that come our way in life, and indeed some may be external. But what I am talking about on this occasion is that the worst obstacles are the ones we put in our way ourselves.

So we are the worst obstacle that we can find, because if we are not willing to understand the nature of what we are living and what we have to do to improve or to obtain success; we will not achieve anything. If we are not willing to change whatever it takes to achieve what we madly desire or need, there will be no way to achieve it.

It's simple logic, but if we don't understand it, we won't be able to move forward in life, no matter what we say or think we are doing. Because achievement is by definition the evidence of a result or effort.

Believing that we can is the key

But in my experience, I have noticed that much of the work we must do is in the mental plane, because that apathy that most of us feel when we think about a subject like this, has psychological roots.

So, believing that we can is the first step, and this will give us the strength to project or plan something feasible for success and act to achieve it.

It may sound crazy, but I myself have found it as a controversial truth: If we are not careful, we can become our own worst enemy.

Don't become your own worst enemy

In life we all have enemies. People who don't like us for any reason, from the most valid to the least valid. That is an absolute truth. But what we can never afford is the luxury of being our own enemy.

Because if the consequences of having enemies are bad, the consequences of being one's own enemy are much worse. Because being your own enemy means self-sabotaging yourself without realizing it, it means believing that you are doing something to get ahead, when in reality you are not doing enough and deep down you know it.

This whole situation implies that whoever becomes his own enemy is self-deceived at best, and becomes a danger to himself at worst.

I always say we deserve to succeed, but success is elusive. And if we don't seriously set ourselves to the task of catching it, we never can. That remains my belief to this day. But I can't deny that sometimes even I am my own worst enemy. When I refuse to exercise or maintain a healthy lifestyle on the grounds that I don't have time.

And well, I'm working on getting better at it. But there are tons of examples we can give. The point is that we should not be our own worst obstacle to achieve success in anything in life, but rather we should be attentive to do what is most convenient and appropriate given the situation we are dealing with. That would be my advice to everyone and to myself as well.

Perhaps it is a bit of an exaggeration to say that we ourselves are the biggest obstacle of all, but it is not far from the truth. Think about it.
