5th Place in Chess960 - Saturday HiveChess Tournament

Hello there chess players,

It is nice to have you all on my blog this Saturday. As you should know by now, with my frequent write-ups about the games I play on my blog, every Saturday has now been mapped on my schedule for the HiveChess tournament, and most times I fantasize about it way before the day.

However, I must be straightforward with you, I did not perform well at all in this round. I totally forgot it was going to be chess960 today. You know that variant of chess where all the chess pieces are placed on round squares at the beginning of the game. I am not a fan of chess960 because of how difficult I find it to be. Most times, I forget where my pieces are on the chess board, and it's hard enough that I'm still trying to improve in standard chess, now I have to worry about chess960.

I came in at 5th place, and I had a win rate of 46% and lost a lot of games. Losing a bunch of games was my fate in this round, I would not lie. How I came in at 5th is still a product of luck to me, and I suspect that probably other players had it tough a little bit, except the winner, the strong player with a long username.

This game against @tangibleay has to be the game with the worst miss ever. How does one miss a mate in two moves after getting the first one right? Well, that was what happened to me in this game. I cannot deny the fact that I screamed at the top of my lungs after I made the worst move ever.

Instead of going ahead to capture his rook after he played Re8, I played Rf7 away from my win. Then I captured the pawn g6 that is well defended by the knight on h8. After realizing what I had done, I had to send a message to the tournament platform, and my opponent replied by stating how shocked he was as well.

This is another game where I fell for a checkmate in one move. After missing a checkmate against Tangibleay, I am the one falling for the checkmate this time. In a game where I was so close to leveling the time control with my opponent, I finally went for the worst move in the position, Nxc3. This allows checkmate in one move with Rd8. Guess what? My opponent did not miss it for a second.

Unfortunately, I only realized it was a checkmate when it had already happened on the board. That shows how poor I was in this round.

A huge shoutout to @samostically for organizing this weekly tournament. For me, it is more than a tournament. It is a weekly exercise. See you all in the next round and stay updated with @sam.chess for more chess updates and tournaments.

I am @southgamer. Try gaming and thank me later.
