A new game that has been added to my reservoir of games is chess and all thanks to the Saturday HiveChess Tournament organized by @sam.chess. In today's round, I put up a tough fight against my opponents and I even brought down a 2300-rated player called ManfromSpain. Although he whipped my ass in the second game, I am still proud to say I have a win against him. He is also the player who finished in 3rd position in the tournament.
But the true showman for me in today's round was @stayoutoftherz. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get a win against him. There was even a game I was up a piece and yet I couldn't win. He outplayed me in the ending part of the game when my time was low. That's smart.
I finished in 11th position in the tournament because of a late-minute takeover from another player with the username justfavour. His last-minute win removed me from the top 10 list and placed him there instead. I couldn't be sadder. Nice win.
A big congratulations to all the winners, you guys did well. Luckily for me, I didn't get paired against the players that finished 1st and 2nd. Maybe in the next round.
This is the position against the 2300-rated player. At this point, I could feel I might bring this one in. My opponent's position isn't looking good, especially since the pawn in front of his king will be dropping soon and I have already taken a pawn previously.
He tried to put up a fight with a couple of checks on my king but after I took the second pawn with my queen, I knew it would soon be over. How will he stop the mate coming soon?
It came to an end with a checkmate from my rook on the board.
This is the game where Stayoutoftherz played a brilliant move. It didn't see the rook capture the pawn and the worst part of all is I can't avoid the mate that comes next. If I go ahead to capture the pawn, mate comes in with the queen, and if I don't, mate still comes in again with the queen. It's even more painful because I have two rooks to his bishop and rook. I was winning.
It's all over at this point. The checkmate can't be avoided anymore.
