Today we return for another week of creating fan art of creatures from this universe. We'll be drawing in chibi style because it's the one we're most attached to these days. We'll also be using Photoshop for the entire illustration. I hope you enjoy the final result! We'll also talk a bit about the lore of this card and the drawing process.
Hola amigos, comunidad de Alien Art y todo aquel que de una forma u otra disfrute del vasto y amplio universo de Splinterlands, espero que estén teniendo un muy lindo día. Hoy regresamos una semana más creando fan art de criaturas de este universo. Estaremos dibujando en estilo chibi porque es el estilo al que más apegados estamos en estos días. Además, estaremos usando Photoshop para todo el dibujo. Espero que les guste el resultado final. También estaremos hablando un poco del lore de esta carta y del proceso de dibujo.
Cryptic is one of the most memorable cards in the Splinterlands universe, both for its striking design and its effect and lore. This creature wields magic capable of slowing down the enemy team. It belongs to the Rebellion set and introduces unique ways of experiencing the game. Without a doubt, it's a solid card for well-structured strategies.
Cryptic es una de esas cartas más memorables del universo de Splinterlands, tanto por su diseño llamativo como por su efecto y lore. Esta criatura maneja magia capaz de ralentizar al equipo enemigo. The card's artwork stands out for its purple hue and grand cape. The character wears a sinister grin, revealing two rows of sharp teeth. From its bony, claw-like hands emerge balls of magical energy. For my fan art, I’ll be translating all of that into a kawaii character, inspired by the chibi style but also heavily influenced by the Kingdom Rush games I used to play—a world of magical art I deeply enjoyed.
El arte de la carta destaca por su color morado y su gran capa. El personaje luce una sonrisa macabra, mostrando dos hileras de afilados dientes. De sus huesudas manos, que asemejan garras, salen bolas de energía mágica. Para mi fan art, estaré llevando todo eso a un personaje kawaii, inspirado en el estilo chibi pero también en los juegos de Kingdom Rush que tanto jugaba antes y cuyo arte lleno de magia también me gustaba mucho.
I started by drawing a simple skeleton using a circle and a rectangle, where I placed the positions of the hands and feet. From there, I added details while working at low opacity. It was a bit tricky to align the cape with the body, but after several attempts I achieved a result I was satisfied with. I replaced the sinister grin from the original card with an angry, twisted mouth showing one fang. I think it gives the character a very kawaii and mischievous vibe. I didn’t add two flames to the hands to avoid covering part of the face, so it will have a single ball of magical energy. I tried to simplify the smallest details and the cape to their most essential expression.
Comencé dibujando un esqueleto simple con un círculo y un rectángulo, al que coloqué las posiciones de las manos y los pies. De ahí fui agregando detalles, trabajando con una opacidad baja. Me costó un poco de trabajo hilar la capa con el cuerpo, pero después de varios intentos obtuve un resultado con el cual estuve satisfecho. La sonrisa macabra de la carta original la sustituí por una boca torcida de enojo mostrando uno de sus colmillos. Creo que le da un aire muy kawaii y malote. En sus manos no agregué dos llamas para no cubrir parte del rostro, así que tendrá una única llama de energía mágica. Traté de simplificar al máximo los detalles más pequeños y los de la capa.
With our sketch ready, it's time to move on to the line art. Something funny happened here—although I started with a thin line as the main idea, once the sketch and line art were complete, I didn’t like the result. So I manually thickened the lines and filled in the areas of greatest occlusion or shadow with solid black. Of course, I’m also sharing the final line art result with you.
Bueno, con nuestro boceto listo, es hora de hacer el line art. Aquí ocurrió algo divertido: aunque comencé con una línea fina como idea principal, después de tener todo el boceto listo y el line art completo, no me gustó el resultado. Así que engrosé manualmente las líneas y dejé en negro total las zonas de mayor oclusión o sombra. Les comparto también, por supuesto, este resultado del line art finalizado.
Well, now our line art is ready. As you can see, thickening the lines—especially the outer contours and the darker areas of the cape—helped create strong contrasts and good depth. I really liked the result and I think it looks much better than the simple thin lines.
Bueno, así ya está listo nuestro lineart. Como ven, engrosar las líneas—sobre todo las líneas exteriores y las zonas oscuras de la capa—ayudó a dar muy buenos contrastes y a crear buenas profundidades. Me gustó mucho y creo que se ve mucho mejor que las simples líneas delgadas.
I started by laying down a purple background as our base, and from there it was all about coloring each area with its respective shade. There’s a lot of purple, so I tried to vary the tones in some sections. I really liked how the eyes turned out, and the flame too—I made its center yellow to make it stand out even more alongside the yellow stripes on the cape. In the original card, it’s unclear whether the character wears shoes, but I liked adding them. With everything colored, it’s time to add multiply layers and a bit of shading and detail to achieve richer volume.
Comencé colocando un fondo morado que será nuestra base, y de ahí solo fue colorear y colorear cada zona con su respectivo color. Mucho morado, por lo que traté de variar la tonalidad en algunas zonas. Me gustó mucho cómo quedaron los ojos y cómo quedó la llama: le hice el centro amarillo para que destacara aún más con el amarillo de las listas de la capa. En la carta original no se ve si el personaje tiene zapatos, pero a mí me gustó agregárselos. Bueno, con todo coloreado es hora de agregar capas en modo multiplicar y añadir un poco de sombras y detalles para lograr más y mejores volúmenes.
