Unlike previous occasions, today we won’t be drawing anything resembling a person—not a wizard, not a sorceress. We’ll be drawing an animal: a magical creature that’s quite scary—Haunted Spider. So let’s talk a bit about this character, its story, and the creation process of this fan art. This will be my entry for the Splinterlands Art Contest Week 361. Let's begin!
Hola amigos, comunidad de Alien Art y Splinterlands, ¡espero que estén teniendo todos un muy lindo día! Más temprano que tarde, hoy les traigo un nuevo fan art de una de las criaturas de Splinterlands. Y a diferencia de las ocasiones anteriores, hoy no estaremos dibujando nada parecido a una persona—ni un mago, ni una hechicera. Estaremos dibujando un animal: una criatura mágica que da bastante miedo—Haunted Spider. Hablemos entonces un poco de este personaje, su historia y el proceso de creación de este fan art. Esta será mi participación para el Splinterlands Art Contest Week 361. ¡Comencemos!
Haunted Spider is a being of dark energy that took the form of an insect—the spider shape is this energy’s favorite. It is a venomous spider and a formidable, intimidating enemy in any battle.

Knowing a bit about the card’s lore—and yes, it’s definitely a dark and eerie one—we begin drawing. The first step is creating a general sketch. I like using blue for my sketches. I start with three circles for the body and straight lines for each of the spider’s legs. These straight lines help guide the positioning. This was my first sketch, and I really like the more childlike style I achieved. I’ll also keep some elements from the original: the multiple eyes, the red lines on the body, and the skull drawing on its back. With the sketch ready, we move on to the next phase.
Conociendo un poco del lore de la carta—y sí que es una carta bastante oscura y tenebrosa—comenzamos a dibujar. Lo primero será hacer un boceto general. Me gusta usar azul en los bocetos. Primero utilizo tres círculos para el cuerpo y líneas rectas para cada una de las patas de la araña. Esas líneas rectas me servirán de guía para la posición. Este fue mi primer boceto, y me gusta mucho el estilo más infantil que logré. Además, mantendré cosas que están en el original: los múltiples ojos, las líneas rojas en el cuerpo y el dibujo del cráneo sobre su espalda. Listo el boceto, pasamos a la siguiente fase.
It’s a fairly simple character to draw, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting. With the sketch done, we can begin the line art. I’ll be drawing over the sketch lines using black.
Es un personaje bastante sencillo de dibujar, pero no por eso menos interesante. Ya con el boceto hecho, podemos comenzar a hacer el line art. Lo estaré haciendo sobre las líneas del boceto en color negro.
I'm using Photoshop for the drawing, and having the sketch on a separate layer allows me to easily remove it and leave the line art clean. This is the result—now it's ready for coloring. I’ll respect the original palette of the card, although I think I’ll use slightly more saturated colors.
Estoy usando Photoshop para el dibujo, y tener una capa separada con el boceto me permite eliminarlo fácilmente y dejar todo el line art limpio. Este es el resultado: ya está listo para colorear. Respetaré la paleta original de la carta, aunque creo que utilizaré colores un poco más saturados.
I’ll start by coloring the details first, then move on to the body. Eyes, red markings, pincers, and fangs—all of that comes first.

And now, the rest of the body colors—with the characteristic red and purple. For now, I’m only using flat colors, no shading yet. I’ll add volume later using light and shadow on different layers, applying various blending modes.
Y ahora sí, el resto de los colores del cuerpo, con los característicos rojo y morado. Por ahora solo estoy usando colores planos, nada de volúmenes, ya que después los estaré logrando usando luces y sombras en distintas capas que iré aplicando y utilizando distintos modos de fusión.
Now I’ll work on the different layers to add volume, colors, textures, and more. I’ll also outline the entire drawing in white to make it stand out, and place it over a blue background that contrasts nicely. I really liked the result—I think the spider looks great. It’s still spooky, but also more childlike and cute. I also want to work on the blue background so it’s not completely flat. I’ll add things like gradients, a spiderweb texture, and the Splinterlands logo, arranged in a way that resembles a music album cover.
Ahora trabajaré en las distintas capas para dar volumen, colores, texturas, etc. También delimitaré todo el dibujo con blanco para que destaque más y lo pondré sobre un fondo azul que contraste bien. Me gustó mucho el resultado y creo que la araña se ve genial. No deja de ser tenebrosa y, a la par, más infantil y bonita. Quiero trabajar también en el fondo azul para no dejarlo completamente plano, así que agregaré, entre otras cosas, algunos degradados, una textura de tela de araña y el logo de Splinterlands, en una distribución que recuerde a un álbum de música.
