In the words of Thomas Edison after 10,000 trials of creating the electric bulb but wasn't successful said,
"I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
The concept of time travel has always been an interesting one to human beings, probably because we all want to have a chance to deal with the uncertainties of life we can't solve. Many scientists and novelists always have imaginary view of what it might looks like time travelling.
Mistakes on its end is just one of those aspect of life; no one is devoid of making mistake, but the good thing comes from learning from our mistakes and preventing them in the future. Some of the mistakes we make in life cost us dearly, so imagine, having an opportunity to right our wrongs with time travels? The poor career choices, the bad decisions with who we went into marriages with, the harsh words we might have spoke to someone out of anger that we didn't mean? Won't it be a very nice thing to do with this wonderful opportunity of time travel?
Here's my honest opinion:
Thinking superficially about it, YES, no doubt, it's an ultimate gift! A golden one at that! To be able to erase our regretful mistakes but then, thinking deep about it, there are many unanswered questions. What is the essence of our humanity? Won't it alter the balance of our human existence?
Mistakes which are the basis of our learning and improvement will no longer be there. Imagine a situation where everything you do could easily be edited out and everything feels like it's as perfect as ever.
Humans are never meant to be perfect, it is born out of constant struggle and imperfections... A child stands and falls multiple and countless times before he could finally stand alone and so is when he's learning how to walk too, that! Is just the classical representation of humans. We try and we keep trying learning from our past to make the future a better one, because I personally believe that Mistakes are not errors, they are the perfect teachers of humility, resilience, empathy, and character.
Talking about the ethics surrounding this particular decision, let me ask you, who even determines the mistakes that merited the criteria to be deleted? Or would everyone be accorded equal opportunity to delete any mistake they deemed fit they want to delete? Will the mistakes deleted also alter the consequences of such mistakes or will the person absorb himself from the mistakes while the ripple effects of his mistakes continues to dawn on the people affected?
In summary, I leave you living a life full of regret with this question, "Why hang on to the past when tomorrow would be better? " Learn from your mistakes and forge ahead! Apologise to people you need to and make peace with yourself! Don't because of the constant chase of perfectionism trying to make a perfect yesterday and lose the chance of living a meaningful life today deleting the hopes of tomorrow
Thanks for reading and have a nice day ahead 👍
