Today just a short post on a national holiday. We go to the past, 40 years ago, there was a Group B as a top class in rallying. Cars were monsters of more then 500bhp and extremely light which produced some of the biggest crashes in sport (some of them fatal) which caused to eliminate that category in 1987 and introduce Group A which included cars that looked the same as road cars a with less power to avoid massive accidents.
Rally Finland was also called Rally 1000 likes because it based on roads where you can find them in that country. And it was raining a lot back in a days so there was one commentator who said: "Now you know why it is called Rally of 1000 lakes. At least you know what fills them."
Monsters of Group B, such as Audi or Peugeot had four wheel drive system while Lancia had rear wheel drive. Of course that four wheel drive machinery ruled at gravel while Lancia used to be super quick on tarmac.
Yeah, Finnish rally was and still is a super fast gravel event and only balls to the wall system brings results. You must be very brave to have average speed of 130km/h on gravel forest roads and to finish the rally.
Please take a look at this piece of history and learn about rallying in the past.
