Festival season in India means shopping for new cloth. Today, most of my relatives went for buying cloth, they asked me to join, but I did not see any necessity of any cloth. People purchase new clothes during festivals to symbolize fresh starts and new beginnings, express joy and celebrate, honor cultural traditions and heritage, and as a way to attract good fortune and blessings. But I wondering about the need to buy cloth when I have numerous cloth with me. There are few which I never used. But is it worth buying cloth for every festival? Cloth is the basic human need and a legal requirement in most parts of the world. People wear clothes for protection and decency, but the act of buying is a choice, not a necessity.
Clothing is the necessity, but buying cloth is our choice. The onset of festival marks the begining of the shopping season. New clothing is a way to show devotion, please deities, and seek blessings for prosperity and happiness. But in my understanding, worshipping is all about the devotion and it does not require the need for new cloth. It can be done by wearing a wash and cleaned cloth which we wear regular at home. Whenever I visit any temple I prefer to remain wrapped in dhoti or by wearing good cloth kept at home which are not turned or dirty. Worshipping is all about the trust, faith, belief and devotion on your Lord. But people made it compulsory to buy and wear new clothes during the festival.
I also see it as an oppurtunity for brands and retailers who are offering significant discounts and promotions during festivals, making it an opportune time for consumers to buy apparel and accessories. But again a consumer should draw a line between the necessity and need. The need is when you do not have any proper cloth to wear either showing it to the community or going to the worship place. The necessity is when, something that is absolutely required, without which one cannot survive, live, or thrive. I belive in this modern times, most of us keeps few set of food cloth at home to attend the function or celebrste any occasion. I am not in habit of flaunting new cloth till I get my exiting set used up. There were many unused set of cloth kept which i can happily use for many coming festival. Then why should I get carried away with the community to buy unwanted stuffs that is not required by me.
People might say few words about me, but again they are not the one who looks after my expenses. It is an individual duty to find what is good and bad for them. For my buying cloth is not worth at the moment, as I have many to make use in the festival. Also by buying cloth regularly, I do not wanted to fill up my wardrobe with excess cloth. The more I buy the more it get stuffed. I wanted a cleaned and light wardrobe and excess cloth makes it quite messy.
In good faith - Peace!!
