Ethereum:

A decentralised network that runs smart contracts: applications that run as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship or third party interference.

This enables developers to create markets, store registries of debts or promises, move funds in accordance with instructions and many other things that have not been invented yet, all without a middle man or counterparty risk.

Developed from crowd funding in Aug of 2014, although its growth has been great. The inability to realise the intial visions into any practical profitable ventures.

We all will have to wait for the next significant development/release/venture to blow its influence into the everyday.
