Description from Strava:
We spent the weekend up in Northumberland to see some friends who live in South Shields. Their daughter was running in the Great North Run (GNR) and we wanted to support her. I did the Newbiggin parkrun on Saturday where there were a few people who were also doing the GNR. I would not do that the day before a half marathon.

On Sunday we took the Metro and ferry to South Shields where the race finishes. It is the biggest half marathon in the world with 60,000 runners. I have not done it, but I am thinking of going into the ballot for next year. I am not sure what chance I have of a place.

It was a fun day with the Red Arrows display team flying over and masses of people around. We did not see the elite athletes, but we saw some early finishers heading home before our friend had even started. The start is staggered due to the numbers and the quick people will do it in about an hour. We did see Paralypian Tanni Grey-Thompson in the crowds. Our friend made it to the finish in the time she expected. It is inspiring with so many people running for charity. We saw a few making it harder by running in costume. One guy had a play house on his back and another was carrying a fridge.

We did a lot of walking that day and then there was a massive queue for the ferry so we were late setting off to come home and got back after midnight.

I wanted to run today even though my legs were stiff. I did my usual loop and it was not too bad once I got going. It was a nice morning out there and I had to dodge the little kids heading to school.

It was also a chance to catch up on some podcasts. I saw a black squirrel out there.

Have a good week and run free.
