Follow Friday: Tearing us apart (not love)

The News

I tend to start with the price chart I generate from @coingecko data. $HIVE is not too exciting yesterday as it tries to stay above 20c. Bitcoin is down a bit so crypto confidence may be down too. $LEO has dropped to the level of the 'legacy crapcoin'. More on Leo later...

Prices

I hope some of you tuned into the feeds from @hivesummitaachen. There are individual videos for the talks now. @hivefest is coming up in Kuala Lumpur soon, but I will not be there. There is a Hive event in Spain next year so I will into going there.

At a conference in Columbia @checkinwith.xyz has been used to onboard lots of new users. The issue is always keeping them engaged with Hive. There are lots of reasons to be here apart from just the rewards. We have games and we actually have some quality content. People need to build up local communities to add value. That takes work, but could have long-term benefits.

Friday Follows

  • Funky drummer @giampaolo19 is back with more cool beats.
  • Artist and storyteller @katharsisdrill is also back again.
  • @makerhacks made a web-based CP/M emulator for those old enough to remember that.
  • Avid parkrun tourist @new.things signed up his friend @parkrunmayor who can help spread the running joy.
  • @adetorrent is posting lots of video reviews of gadgets.
  • If you prefer cars then @planetauto have what you want.
  • @web3creative is a new project from @alex-rourke.

I have promoted communities before and ought to get back into that. When chatting with @new.things I came up with the idea for parkrun Reviews where people can post details of events they have been to. We can pin these to @worldmappin to provide a useful resource for runners.

We could build other resources like this. I know @nicklewis is collecting churches. Any sort of place can be added to a map. Using a community gives people one place to go to find what they want and the posts there can be moderated to keep it on topic. It only costs 3 $HIVE to create a community, so why not?

The Dog House

Here we go again. I heard that the Leo community had been complaining over on Twtr/X/whatever about being downvoted. I do not use that hellsite for obvious reasons. I know that Leo have struggled to get support for their proposals, but that may be down to disagreements with the whales over what is valuable for Hive. It seems to have gotten personal with people having their Threads downvoted by one of our biggest accounts. From what I have seen that seems to be to counter the votes from the Leo Voter account. You can argue about whether a Thread deserves over a dollar, but this really is just (cheap) beer money. Some people may be talking about moving the project away from Hive and that would be sad. Given the small size of our community we cannot afford this sort of in-fighting and it looks bad for big accounts to be downvoting posts that are not actually abuse.

Sometimes I despair over this platform as people seem more keen on scoring 'points' than building something.

I've seen this sort of thing elsewhere with people downvoting for someone spamming when the spam is all about the downvotes. Neither side will back down so it goes on forever. That is not something I would have anything to do with.

Being a Hiver is hard sometimes.

The End

After nine years here I have seen a lot of drama, but the good community keeps me coming back. I always say that Hive is imperfect and you may need to compromise sometimes to avoid being hassled. I just find other platforms worse these days.

Keep smiling and Hive five!
