This boy defended himself against one rioter who chased him into a parking lot. He defended himself against more aggressors, one of which brandished a pistol.

Riot zones are not legally defined territory . And he was part of a militia group there to protect private property. Including the owner of at least one of the business there. At least in my state, of Texas, it is entirely justified and codified in law that if I need to prevent someone from committing, say, arson on a third parties property I could enter it and use lethal force if I judged that reasonable.
