This post exists for one reason only, a rather sad one if you want to see it that way, and it’s that a few days ago, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released, the second part of the reimagining of Final Fantasy VII and a game I had been waiting for years to play.
Unfortunately, time has caught up with me, and my graphics card is not compatible with the game, which I find a bit strange considering that my GTX 1080 can run the first part perfectly on high settings at 1080p. I understand that there might be some compatibility issues, but since the game runs on Unreal Engine 4, I don’t see why they couldn’t extend the minimum support from the 2060 to at least the 1070 or 1080, especially since even the 1650 can run the game decently thanks to a mod that extends compatibility to the 16 Series. However, as of now, there’s nothing similar for the 10 Series.
Because of all this, I decided to return to an unfinished matter. I looked for my save file from when I finished the game to start a new playthrough on Hard Mode, which works more like a New Game+ since you keep all your equipment from the start but lose the ability to use items both in and out of combat. This adds an extra layer of difficulty and changes the way you have to play. Additionally, when you sit on a bench to rest, you don’t recover MP, only HP, so MP becomes a resource you need to manage very carefully. The only way I’ve found to restore it is by breaking some boxes scattered throughout the chapters. Therefore, to heal, I have to almost completely ignore my Cure materia and use Prayer instead, which consumes two ATB bars but no MP, making it the best way to heal unless it’s an emergency and I need to use Cure.
Additionally, the damage dealt by enemies is increased, and new combat encounters are unlocked that I haven’t seen yet. For that, I’d like to first unlock all the upgrades I’m missing, as there are also new upgrades that are only obtainable during Hard Mode.
I’m not going to act like Final Fantasy VII Remake came out 10 years ago, it’s only been 5, but it’s incredible how spectacular the game looks, and more importantly, how well it runs on my graphics card. It really makes me wonder why they couldn’t make Rebirth compatible with the 10 Series (and AMD’s RX 5000). But oh well, I don’t want to keep lamenting; I’ll just have to upgrade my graphics card.
The PC port is considered bad due to the limited options it offers, as well as micro-stutters that occur in many cases. Personally, none of this has ever affected me, and my experience has been bug-free and enjoyable. Back in the day, I completed all the side quests and planned to do the same now during Hard Mode, with the intention of unlocking manuscripts to upgrade weapons even further beyond their limits.
As for the combat, there are no surprises, it’s one of the best ARPGs I’ve ever played. Each character has their own unique traits, and their gameplay is very satisfying. I missed pulling off ultra-fast combos with Tifa or slicing everything in two with Cloud’s Buster Sword. I haven’t had the chance to play with Aerith yet, so I need to get my star healer back as soon as possible.
By Chapter 3, I already had access to the virtual combat challenges with Chadley, but not the Shinra Combat Simulator, which becomes available later. So, the ideal plan for me is to progress through the chapters, level up my materia, and build a more optimized setup to face the game’s strongest enemies at the end, as some of them are exclusive to the highest difficulty.
I’ve considered using mods, like one that replaces the Buster Sword with Sora’s Keyblade, and maybe some other aesthetic changes to make the replay more interesting. I might get lazy and just play it as it is, but it will undoubtedly be a fun experience.
Lately, I haven’t been able to play much due to work. I have my Yakuza Kiwami playthrough in progress, and I haven’t made any progress in the last few days. I’ve been going non-stop for months, so I think that’s worth mentioning, haha. But anyway, I hope to finish this FFVII run and not leave it halfway. I might even record some gameplay of the combat later, it’s really super entertaining.
I don’t have much more to add because I don’t want to spoil anything. I’d love to recommend once again that you play the remake if you haven’t already and if you enjoy ARPGs. I’ll start saving up for a better graphics card so I can play sooner rather than later. I also need an upgrade to play games that require RTX cores, like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages. These are certainly tough times for GTX users, but that’s just how it is.
Thank you very much for reading, as always. See you around.
