From Lovers to Strangers

I had a boyfriend.  He was a typical fine man. Tall, broad-chested, fair skin, intelligent, super smart, enterprising, name it. He was everything. And because I am a lover girl too, our vibes were one in town, or so I thought. This man of mine knew exactly what to say to make me calm anytime I was mad at him which hardly happened at the time. It was such a sweet love for the first two weeks. We planned to meet after some time, and it was like the universe was so in support of the ship. We met and everywhere lit up. We gisted for the hours we were together, and we departed to continue the conversation over the phone. He was a computer engineer and was always busy, so most times, we would talk at night… no, through the night and that would sustain us till the next night. One day, I noticed that the night call hours reduced. I wondered what happened, but I didn’t quite get it. Maybe he was busy, I thought, so, I let him be until the hours turned into a few minutes that I couldn’t cope with any longer. I texted him for a confirmation of whatever the situation may be, but he responded with, “he was having a bad time”. I couldn’t get angry immediately because why would you shut me out because you were having a bad time? I should be there for you through the bad times, right? After he got back from his bad time, we talked about it, and he promised it wasn’t going to happen again, so I took his words for it. Communication returned to normal for a few days, and then, he picked up again, but this time, it wasn’t a few minutes call again because I never even saw that. Rather, he went for a whole day without talking to me, and he was actively updating his WhatsApp status. The confused lover girl me wondered if I had said or done anything wrong, so I reached out to him again to know what’s up, and he said, “work got busier”.  Alright, that’s fine then. Since I was a student and was not as busy as him, I let him be. Whatever made him change his mind, I had no idea, but he came around again, and was acting normal, however, I was already mentally checking out of the ship. I wasn’t going to be having an on and off in a relationship that was less than two months old. Nah. I am not made for that. By the time he started reaching out again, I was already mentally single. On a normal day, I would return his calls anytime I missed them, but by the time he returned from his ‘work busy days’, I was already logged off, so, I met him with one-word replies, I viewed his status updates without reacting, I missed his calls and intentionally not return them, I got his messages on WhatsApp and looked away until the messages stopped coming. That’s how I ghosted him into an EX. Will I do it again? Yes, I will as long as I’m being treated like I do not matter, whether in a friendship or a love relationship, I will.
