“Oh, this community? Very safe ooo. And the houses there are very very cheap”. Ehhhhhh, run ooo!!! Because the house agent is only after his own gains. And trust me, the only time you’ll see them humble, and down to earth is before you pay the rent and all commissions attached. The moment they get their share, that is the end of the deal.
I have a little experience house hunting, and I can tell you that the tips I’m about to reveal in this story are from experience.
House hunting in Nigeria today is not for the weak. As a human that wants absolute peace of mind, please, make sure the community you want to rent an apartment in does not have a history of robbery or any form of insecurity. One of my uncles fell victim to this, and it didn’t end well at all.
When the armed robbers visited his family, the community members said, “he should brace up because the moment they set their eyes on an individual, they would keep going there until they see the end of that person”. So, it is very important that you make your own research before you opt for the house that the agent tells you is the best for you.
Secondly, power supply. Even if you are not in the tech field or need light 24/7, the fact that you can just turn on your fan anytime you feel hot, is very relieving. The house agents will sweet talk you into thinking that the house you like the most among the houses they took you to is in best hands when it comes to power supply, but that is not the truth. When I was house hunting with my brother, it was a bike man that let us know that the light in the area is a no if truly that was important to us. So, we ran without looking back. So, do your own research. Forget the agent. They don’t even live there to start with.
Network is also very important. As you are entering that house, and you are falling in love with it, check your phone to see that the network you are using works very well there so you won’t have to spread your router or your MIFI under the sun because you are looking for network to watch your YouTube tutorials or even send a WhatsApp message. I lived in one house in 2023, and it was like this. The guys moved in, and barely a month after, they ran away. I would return home daily to see their router on the fence just because they needed to use the internet. The sad part? They had refurbished the house into exactly what they wanted.
Ehnehn, another important one is anytime you want to house hunt, make sure you do it during the rainy season. In fact, if there’s a house you like, make sure you go back there on a rainy day to see for yourself that you are safe. The day I tried this with one of my sisters, we realized that as the rain was falling outside, it was with the same force it was raining inside. The walls were drenched, and the sockets seemed like it wouldn’t be safe for use at all.
