In 2013 when I gained admission into a polytechnic, I needed to rent a room to stay. The community, not much of a town, but for my school, only had one rooms in a face me, I face you apartment, so I went for one of those. The room, looking scary with naked wires lying everywhere, and the walls looking like it would fall off, I knew I had to make it a bit comfortable and less scary to live in, so I spent a little money on doing that.

I bought a 4kg bucket of paint, invited an electrician and fixed all I could fix, bought carpet too. It was looking all good to live in. I had no personal kitchen or bathroom, so I had to make arrangements for that.
I would cook at the entrance of my room, had a bucket and bowl where I neatly placed my plates, spoons, and pots. The small room, I divided into two, separating the kitchen part from the bedroom, and in the bedroom, I had my table and chair where I read. The window was so small that I would sleep on the floor most of the time, but one thing though, the room was always clean.
The environment was ghetto, but my room was my comfort. I wouldn’t leave home in the morning without sweeping, and rearranging the bed neatly, cook my meals, clean the dishes, and make sure everywhere was sparkle clean. Why? It affects my productivity and mental well-being.

I moved from there to another institution in 2016, and I rented another one-room apartment in a face me I face you apartment still. The window was a bit better, so it helped with ventilation properly. The environment, still ghetto, but my room was always the comfort. I gave the room a bit of a lift with paints, and I was able to afford to buy a rack at the time where I arranged my kitchen items. I also got a wall hanger for my clothes to help me create more space in the room.
Now, my room is partitioned into the kitchen, and the bedroom because there was no space for a kitchen in the house at all. The bathroom was also a general one, but for myself, I made sure it was always clean. I wouldn’t use a dirty bathroom for the fear of fungal infection and bacteria flying everywhere. I would buy disinfectants for the bathroom and the toilet, wash it at least twice a week, while convincing others to do the same. I didn’t use the general toilet seat also, I had my potty that was meant for only me.
This is what hygiene means. Been hygienic is making yourself and your little space clean, and comfortable all the time no matter how little the space or the situation is. Money plays a little role in been hygienic. Simple things like bathing twice or once daily, brushing your teeth, cleaning your space, not leaving the dishes out exposed to flies, making your food in a clean environment all add to been hygienic.
However, the only thing that money will do is to increase access to more things that will further make your hygiene spark like wearing perfumes, using deodorants, giving your space a face lift, and making it more comfortable for living.
Money is good, no lies, but if someone is dirty as a broke individual, the hygiene will not suddenly fall in place when the money comes. Been hygienic comes first, then, money will increase the access to more hygiene options in self and environment.
