I still remember that day… It was a cold New England morning when I met that person. He gave me a metal box along with a letter that I was to deliver to a manor located on a small island off the coast of Brunswick, Maine.
Upon accepting the job, he gave me a big smile, so wide it didn't feel like a smile at all.
Something about it seemed off, but the letter included a cheque to cover the bill, and I didn’t have any other work at the time. My ex-wife had been complaining about the alimony for days, so I didn’t have the luxury of turning up my nose at paid work.
I slipped on my coat and wrapped a scarf around my neck. A few hours and a short boat ride out there to deliver the box and then back by supper.
Or so I thought.
