There was always something wrong about the decorations my father guarded so carefully.
After all, he would never let us get inside.
Caleb and I tried many times, but we would always be caught right when we were about to succeed.
“But not this time!” I grinned as I held in my hand the one and only–
“The Key!” Caleb gasped.
“Indeed, the key.” I laughed.
“How did you get your hands on it? Dad always keeps it with him,” said Caleb, still not believing what he was seeing.
In my hand, I held an ancient-looking key, the key that would lead me to the secrets of the attic.
I walked towards the attic, as Caleb followed behind me, trying to make as little noise as possible.
“Why are you being so careful? he isn’t home anyway,” I said.
Dad is always gone this time of year. I never know where.
We finally reach the attic.
“Are you sure about this?” Caleb said in a sudden, scared voice that startled me.
“Come on, don't be a scaredy-cat, weren't you the one who said he wanted to know?” I said.
I wasn't gonna go back after coming this far.
“B-But doesn’t this door seem a bit scary?” Caleb said, still scared.
I looked at the door, and a sudden chill passed through my spine.
It did indeed look scary, scary like those abandoned houses in horror movies. But our house isn’t abandoned at all. Why was this the only door that was decrepit like this? This only made me more curious.
“We have to do it now, or else we would have to wait another year.”
I slid the key into the lock.
A loud click resounded through the empty house. But the door didn't open, probably because it was old.
I pushed it open and stepped in.
“Agh, it’s so dark,” said Caleb.
The air was thick, sour, like something rotten left too long in the dark.
“There has to be some kind of light in here,” I said.
As I clambered through the darkness, the light flickered on.
“Gee, good job, Caleb,” I praised my little brother. Didn't he say he was scared of the attic? Now he even went to search for the light button?
“Uh- sister, it wasn’t me.”
It wasn’t … Caleb?
I froze.
Fighting the chills in my body, I looked around.
The room was filled with what I thought were decorations. Oh, but they weren’t decorations at all. There were masks, dolls, and there were bodies.
But they weren’t decorations at all.
At the door, someone was standing there.
Watching.
