The summer is quickly coming to an end here in western, New York. Although you wouldn't know it by how well the garden is still producing. Every day I am able to pick about this many vegetables to preserve or enjoy fresh.

Swiss Chard, Spearmint, and Rosemary still looking beautiful.

The beets and carrots I planted in early August are doing nicely too. I only sowed a few seeds for a fall crop.

The Red Marconi Peppers are starting to all turn red now. Soon I will have plenty to pick but you can't see them through all the thick leaves.

I'm still getting Zucchini from these plants, and they are just now showing signs of bore damage. This container of Basil has given me an enormous amount. I made pesto, dried some and froze some into pucks for the freezer. I am using fresh every time I process a batch of tomato sauce as well.

The three Eggplant on the right have done fairly well. I harvested three from them to date. The Party Time Cucumber vined all the way to the top of my Lilac tree. This type of cucumber vined everywhere and fruited constantly, so much so, that I had a hard time eating so many. lol

On the other hand, the pickling cucumber plants did not do as well. I pulled them all out this week as they were covered with powdery mildew.

The Banana Peppers did an outstanding job producing this year compared to last summer. I have fried them a few times for dinner but froze and vacuum sealed the rest for the winter.

Some of the veggies harvested weekly. I did put up 6 jars of sweet pickle spears with the cucumbers last week.

I let this Turban Squash vine grow up one of the trellises and the squash grew at the very top. It was the only one to grow to completion but oh my goodness, it was so delicious with porkchops for dinner.

hivegarden-journal-sweet-potatoes.jpg

The Roma paste tomato plants are still loaded down and every three days I have to pick a lot to make into sauce. The Sweet Potato vine is cascading over the edge of the raised bed. I can't wait to see how this one potato may produce.

The Russet Potato plants are all starting to die back that are growing in the 15 gallon grow bags. This week we will pull out all those plants and dry the potatoes.

I planted another round of Green Beans in the tower garden and should have a decent amount before the cold days arrive. Also, I am still getting a few strawberries here and there from the other tower. Mostly the young chipmunk seems to be enjoying them.

Lastly, the butterfly garden is bursting with bees and butterflies, and the Goldfinches are eating all the seeds from the Zinnias and the Salvia every day. The hummingbirds are fighting over the nectar from the flowers and the bird feeder. You can tell that summer is coming to an end when the hummers get so territorial. They usually depart for warmer weather mid-September.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the garden update for early September and that you have a wonderful week ahead. Happy Labor Day to those in the states.
