Walking by Palmers Island

Good Morning and have a great day

Today I will share a few shots of part of a walk I took one Morning, I had parked at the other end of the Harbor walk, and walked across it and then out on the road going by Palmers siland and these shots are from that part of the walk

A little bit of the history of the island

Pre-dating the Pilgrims’ arrival in Plymouth by 18 years, English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold first surveyed the 6-acre island during his exploration of New Bedford Harbor in 1602. The island was later named after William Palmer, an original settler of Old Dartmouth. The island was used as an internment camp for Native Americans during King Phillip’s War (1675-1676) and as a garrison during the Revolutionary War. A hotel and amusement park were built during the 19th century. During the 1938 Hurricane all the structures on the island were washed away with the exception of the lighthouse.

Beside the island or part of the island at low tide is a lighthouse which you may see in the middle of this shot, i only had a wider angle lens with me that morning so coudnt zoom in on the lighthouse.

At the end of the road ast Plamers Island is this control building, where they can close the gates and in effect join the two Hurrican barrier walls one coming from Fairhaven and the one I am standing on in New Bedford

and from the ame spot turing around and looking back along the huirricane, with Palmer island on the righ and the Wind Turbine construction site barrier wall
