Grupo K-L: Teatro de la ternura

Cuando conocí a mi amiga Migdalia Deulofeu Clausell, el poema favorito de su autoría terminaba con el verso: al final de la calle hay ansias de amar. Esta aseveración se ha mantenido en mi ojo inquisidor todos estos años. Observo a la mayoría de quienes me rodean y los juzgo en silencio a través de aquel verso. Incluso he detectado que ese enjuiciamiento se lleva a cabo en segundo plano hacia mi propia persona. Al final de la calle hay ansias de amar. Las palabras a continuación no conforman una incoherencia, se puede ser varias vidas a la vez. Hoy quiero hablarles de un grupo de amigos jóvenes; de niños desbordados; de hombres y mujeres con un gesto que les iguala; unos chiquillos que te arrancan esas ansias a golpe de caricias.

Teatro de la Ternura

Les comentaba, no es una incoherencia llamar a estos artistas con diferentes grados generacionales en su propia persona. Y es que esa es una de las ventajas de ser Síndrome Down. Como yo, puede que llegues a cumplir 50 y sigas teniendo 8. Así que allí tenemos jóvenes de 17, 20, 35 y, al final, somos todos de la misma edad. Jajaja. ¡Súper!

Taller Lusarreta

Este proyecto radica en la Parroquia Católica que llaman La Milagrosa, en Santo Suárez y Paz. Lleva el nombre del sacerdote español, párroco de este lugar, que halló a bien fundar un espacio para los Jóvenes Down de la región. Allí conviven desde las 8 de la mañana hasta las 4 de la tarde. Tienen una agenda cargada de aprendizajes para todo el día.

Los descubrí por medio de Ileana (A. Plásticas) y Yara (Teatro), colegas del Grupo Koolage, que comenzaron a impartirles talleres. Para abreviar, les conocemos desde el 2017 y los frutos en todas direcciones han sido centenares, genuinos, serios.

Teatro K-L

El Grupo de Teatro K-L (Koolage-Lusarreta), como ya debes imaginar, está compuesto, en su mayoría, por actrices y actores que tienen el llamado Síndrome Down. Una enfermedad que desconozco. Pero como mi intención no es hablarte de ella, pues ni siquiera me he detenido a investigar. Para serte franco, no lo hice el día que conocí a estos muchachos, no lo haré ahora para escribir un post lleno de verborrea.

Ah, pero sí puedo afirmar con todas las de la ley: A través de los años de trabajo en la docencia y en las artes, he tenido la bendición de acaparar muchos gestos de aprecio; pero nunca me sentí tan querido, agasajado, fortuito (aunque no encaje el término).

Dar un taller con estos muchachos es la gloria. Te pasas la clase entera entre caricias y afectos.

Éxitos

Bajo la dirección artística de Yara (@ailimay) hemos montado y puesto en escena varias obras. Las que más me llegan a la mente ahora: Las bodas de la ratita mireyita y Romeo y Julieta, miradas desde el alma. Nos hemos presentado en tantos espacios teatrales, culturales, empresariales, que no podría recordar. Entre los más queridos: Teatro del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, América, Bertolt Brecht, Miramar, Asociaciones, Casas de Cultura, Casas de distintas naciones, Festivales, eventos… Les hablo sobre estos logros no por el éxito en sí, que no es primordial. Pues, como coinciden los grandes: en el teatro, lo importante es el proceso. Sin embargo, lo menciono con la doble intención de hablarles sobre el trabajo actoral de estos niños y, de la satisfacción de “sí pueden”.

Porque es triste escuchar el término discapacitados. Me pregunto, de existir esta palabra, ¿no lo somos todos? Basta con aterrizar en un país totalmente desconocido y con una lengua “rara” para que veas tus capacidades reducidas al máximo. Lo peor es ver como sus propios familiares desconfían de sus habilidades, poder, valor… Cuando comenzamos a trabajar con ellos, los muros emocionales y peyorativos eran infranqueables. Al menos, eso parecía. Pero el teatro posee una magia sazonada con pícaras rivalidades que se encarga de transmutar lo cotidiano al mundo de lo trascendente.

No desistimos. Muchas veces lloramos. Sí. Nos pusimos rojos una vez, pero se logró el sueño: nació K-L.

Con el devenir de las temporadas y las presentaciones, los detractores demudaron el rostro. Si bien aún existen algunos comentarios -escasos- fuera de lugar, ya el discurso es otro. Estamos seguros que el teatro no solo vino a regalarles una acción; sino entregarles el lugar que se merecen frente a la sociedad, a sus familias, en sus entornos. Tener síndrome Down no es una discapacidad; pues todos los seres humanos tenemos capacidades diferentes. Eso es lo que nos obliga a vivir en colectividad. Los discapacitados son aquellos que no pueden dejar de lado sus egos y temores, para mirar a los demás como semejantes.

Pero… ¿Saben qué?

K-L Group: Theater of Tenderness

When I met my friend Migdalia Deulofeu Clausell, her favorite poem ended with the line: at the end of the street there is a yearning for love. This statement has remained in my inquisitive eye all these years. I observe most of those around me and silently judge them through that verse. I've even detected that this judgment takes place in the background toward my own person. At the end of the street there is a yearning for love. The following words are not an incoherence; one can be several lives at once. Today I want to talk to you about a group of young friends; of overwhelmed children; of men and women with a gesture that makes them equal; some children who tear those longings from you with their caresses.

Theater of Tenderness

I was telling you, it's not inconsistent to call these artists with different generational levels in their own person. And that's one of the advantages of having Down syndrome. Like me, you can reach 50 and still be 8. So there we have young people of 17, 20, 35, and, in the end, we're all the same age. Hahaha. Great!

Lusarreta Workshop

This project is located in the Catholic Parish called La Milagrosa, in Santo Suárez y Paz. It's named after the Spanish priest, parish priest of this place, who saw fit to found a space for Down syndrome youth in the region. They meet there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They have a packed learning schedule for the whole day.

I discovered them through Ileana (A. Plastic Arts) and Yara (Theater), colleagues at the Koolage Group, who began teaching them workshops. Long story short, we've known them since 2017, and the fruits of our work have been hundreds, genuine, and serious.

K-L Theater

The K-L Theater Group (Koolage-Lusarreta), as you might imagine, is mostly made up of actresses and actors who suffer from Down syndrome. A disease I'm unfamiliar with. But since my intention isn't to tell you about it, I haven't even bothered to research it. To be frank, I didn't do so the day I met these guys, and I won't do so now to write a post full of verbiage.

Oh, but I can truly affirm: Through my years of work in teaching and the arts, I have been blessed to receive many gestures of appreciation; But I've never felt so loved, honored, fortuitous (although the term doesn't quite fit).

Teaching a workshop with these young people is heaven. You spend the entire class surrounded by caresses and affection.

Successes

Under the artistic direction of Yara (@ailimay), we've staged several plays. The ones that come most to mind now are The Wedding of the Little Mouse Mireyita and Romeo and Juliet, Seen from the Soul. We've performed in so many theatrical, cultural, and corporate venues that I couldn't possibly remember. Among the most beloved: Teatro del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, América, Bertolt Brecht, Miramar, associations, cultural centers, centers of different nations, festivals, events... I'm telling you about these achievements not for the sake of success, which isn't paramount. Because, as the greats agree: in theater, what matters is the process. However, I mention it with the dual intention of speaking to you about the acting work of these children and the satisfaction of knowing "yes, they can do it."

Because it's sad to hear the term "disabled." I wonder, if such a word exists, aren't we all? All it takes is landing in a completely unfamiliar country with a "strange" language to see your abilities reduced to the minimum. The worst thing is seeing how their own families distrust their abilities, power, and worth... When we began working with them, the emotional and pejorative walls were insurmountable. At least, that's what it seemed. But theater possesses a magic seasoned with mischievous rivalries that transforms the everyday into a world of the transcendent. We didn't give up. We often cried. Yes. We blushed once, but the dream was achieved: K-L was born.

As the seasons and performances went by, the detractors' faces changed. While there are still some (rare) inappropriate comments, the discourse has shifted. We are certain that the theater not only came to give them a performance, but to give them the place they deserve in society, with their families, and in their environments. Having Down syndrome is not a disability; all human beings have different abilities. That is what compels us to live in a community. People with disabilities are those who cannot put aside their egos and fears and see others as equals.

But... you know what?
