Hiking in the lowland forests of Aceh with children this time was a very special moment. Amidst the lush trees and the soothing sounds of nature, we found a nest of the Sunda Frogmouth (Batrachostomus cornutus), one of the rare and hard-to-find nocturnal bird species.

The Sunda Frogmouth is known for its unique appearance and extraordinary camouflage ability. This bird has grayish-brown feathers that make it almost invisible when perched on tree branches, resembling bark or dead twigs. Its small body shape and "frog beak" (frogmouth) are the characteristics that distinguish them from other nocturnal birds.

This bird is active at night, hunting insects as its main food. During the day, the Sunda Frogmouth rests more, is quiet without much movement, so its presence often goes unnoticed. That's why this encounter was so valuable!

Hiking with children provides a direct learning experience about the importance of protecting forests as a habitat for various species, including unique birds such as the Sunda Frogmouth. This is a reminder that Aceh's lowland forests hold a wealth of biodiversity that we need to preserve together.

May our little experience inspire many people to care more about nature and continue to explore it with respect!
