Your Energy is Contagious, Make it Worth Catching

While lying on my bed, counting the ceiling lines and letting my mind wander, a recent event crossed my mind and curved my lips into a smile. It was one of those rainy days at school. I had gone to meet my project supervisor to collect my file, but since he wasn’t in the office yet, I had to wait. Another coursemate of mine was there too, so we started talking about random things. Nothing too deep, just talks about our lecturers, acting out their behaviors, laughing at the funny remarks they make in class, and tossing in silly side comments to keep the conversation alive and maybe help wave off the cold.  While we were there, I noticed a girl sitting close by. She had that quiet, gloomy aura, like someone lost in her thoughts. I thought of approaching her to ask if she was okay, but being someone who probably has a degree in minding my business, unless it’s pressing, I kept my distance. Then, out of nowhere, she smiled (well, our eyes met). It wasn’t a forced smile, but the kind that sneaks out when you just can’t help yourself. She waved and scooted over to where we sat. Soon enough, she had chipped into our conversation; casually, lightly, and before long, she was laughing with us. Whoever she had come to see arrived before ours did, but before leaving, she said, “I really love your energy. It lifted my mood.”  Thinking of that moment reminded me that energy is really contagious. The kind of vibes you bring into a space can either weigh people down or lift them higher. Sometimes, you don’t even realize who’s watching, listening, or feeding off your presence. Your joy might be someone else’s spark, and your laughter might be someone else’s medicine. Life, as we all know, is heavy enough on its own. That’s why we owe it to ourselves and to others to carry light energy. This doesn’t mean pretending to be happy all the time, but it does mean consciously choosing kindness, warmth, and authenticity when we can. Because the truth is, vibes travel further than words ever will. So try being intentional about the energy you put out. You never know who might be sitting nearby, waiting for a reason to smile.
