Hygiene and Sanitation are the most paramount things that are needed in our lives. When people talk about hygiene and sanitation, some people always think it’s just about keeping your hands clean or brushing your teeth. Sincerely speaking to me, it’s bigger than that. It’s about how we respect our bodies, our homes, and even our environment.

As a Nigerian, my parents were very strict about cleanlines, because the Bible says cleanliness is next to holiness in everything we do.When l wake up in the morning, the first thing l always do is to brush my teeth, sweep the room and environment, go to toilet to defecate and after that l take my bathe before going out and l make sure everywhere looked neat before l went out. Up till today, that habit still lives in me. I can’t step out of the house without brushing, bathing, and wearing clean clothes. It may sound simple, but it makes me feel fresh, confident, and ready for the day. This habit had mastered me up to till because l hate dirtiness seriously.

One thing I also take seriously is washing hands regularly. I remembered then, before you touched food, you must wash your hands, no negotiation. Because germs are everywhere, and that small act of washing can save you from many sicknesses. In fact anytime I’m with friends or family, I always remind them, “Abeg wash your hands first before eating.” It’s like second nature now. Outside the home, I believe sanitation is a responsibility we all share. For example, when I buy something on the street, I try not to throw the nylon or empty bottles on the ground. It may look small, but when everyone dumps dirt anyhow, it turns the whole environment dirty and it's not a good idea. We have to keep the environment tidy all the time in order to stop the spread of sickness all over everywhere.

Another personal habit I cultivated again is about my personal hygiene. I took my bath twice a day after I got back from work due to the stress l went through that day with the heat and dust that l had encountered. Apart from feeling clean, it also makes you comfortable around people. Nobody wants to sit beside someone smelling of sweat. I also take care of my nails and hair. Keeping them neat is part of self-respect. Hygiene and sanitation are not just routines. They are signs of discipline and love. Love for yourself, for people around you, and for the environment. Because when you stay clean, you stay healthy, and when your community is clean, everybody benefits.

At the end of the day, small things like washing your hands, keeping your home tidy, disposing waste properly, and caring for your body go a long way. They may look ordinary, but they are the foundation of good health and dignity. And that’s why hygiene and sanitation will always be important to me, and something I love to share with others.
