I was listening to the radio yesterday afternoon while I was playing around with some google adsense and analytics when on came Dr Robert. The station was Talksport and as the name suggests, the conversations are generally around sports, but in the UK loads of magicians are footy fans. Anyway on comes Dr Robert who was the lead singer and founder of The Blow Monkeys. Talk about a blast from the past, and it turns out that he is a Blues Brother and a Chelsea fan. You will do for me son and so today we are going back to the 80s to hear some tunes from The Blow Monkeys. ### Before we listen to the music, do you know where they got their name The Blow Monkeys? *** It is Tuesday and that of course means that it's #ttt or #threetunetuesday and so it's time to share some tunes with you! *** @ablaze started #ttt **224** weeks ago! They formed in 1981 and were quite popular in the UK and I will be curious if they have been heard of by our overseas readers! They were part of the new wave movement which was a catchall copout name to describe music of that time. Their style evolved from a more post-punk and jazz-infused sound to a slicker, soul-pop style that defined their biggest hits. Dr. Robert has explained in interviews that he spent time in Australia in the late 1970s. While he was there he played with a group of Aboriginal people who used native wind instruments. The group was given the rather unfortunate and racist nickname of "blow monkeys" by some people. When Dr. Robert moved back to England to form a band, he decided to use the name as a way of reclaiming it and highlighting the injustice behind the original moniker. ### Tune 1 - The Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no5XeOJHxK8 This is the song that gave the band its major international breakthrough. It's a smooth, sophisticated pop-soul track with a groovy bassline and a hint of jazz. It's a prime example of the "sophisti-pop" sound of the mid-80s. Album: Animal Magic Release: February 1986  ### Tune 2 - The Blow Monkeys - It Doesn't Have to Be This Way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_ra8X_8waA A more upbeat and optimistic track, this song was the band's biggest hit in the UK, reaching the top 5. It's an infectious, danceable tune with a powerful message of hope and defiance. Album: She Was Only a Grocer's Daughter Release: 1987  We finish up with a collaboration ... ### Tune 3 - The Blow Monkeys feat Kym Mazelle - Wait https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKzKatxc3Ck This funk and house-infused track is a collaboration with American singer Kym Mazelle and is a great example of the band's later shift into more dance-oriented sounds.
