, "A Recipe for a Memory: What's a recipe that is tied to a powerful memory? Share the recipe and the story behind it."
Keeping things simple is a great thing to do.
The story
When I thought of this prompt it was brought about when I saw a packet of morning rolls in a shop. Many many years ago my maternal grandfather was ill with cancer.
Rather than being in hospital he wanted to be at home. It was during the summer holidays and my mother was staying with her parents. I went with her to their house in Elie in Fife. I had a friend from boarding school who lived not far away in Anstruther, they were really nice and I would spend most days there.
Quite often I would help my friend's mum in the garden getting vegetables or helping cook.
They also chickens and ducks, and I had a love for fried duck eggs.
One day on a Wednesday I was at my friends house when I heard the phone ring. My friends mother answered the phone and I could tell she was upset.
I thought the worst and knew that my grandpa had left this world onto his next journey.
I just had this urge to fry a duck egg and have it with a soft morning roll and butter.
As I got the pan out, and poured the oil into the oil, in came my friend's mum.
Sure enough grandpa passed away.
He was a pillar of society, a justice of the peace, a church elder, a bank manager when it meant something in a community. He was a huge freemason and the Grand treasurer of the Scottish Freemasons. I remember so often in the school holidays having to help xerox things for him. These things were huge, but it gave me lots of scrap paper to draw and write on.
His funeral was here in Kirkcaldy where I live now, and the funeral was mobbed with masons from all over Scotland and beyond attended.
I digress, my friend's mother was the one crying, I was comforting her and frying my eggs.
I had two frying and they came out absolutely perfect. I had cracked it, they were just our of this world.
To this date, when I see morning rolls or duck eggs, my mind wanders back to that day many years ago.
What about you? Do you have a fun/ny story about how you learnt to drive a car, or ride a bicycle?
Let me know in the comments! And why not join in with the fun and start your Chronicle!?
Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!
