Rather than sticking to a date to celebrate our years together, we chose to be different and nominated a weekend. The first weekend in October to be precise. And so it was that we set off from Tralee to Galway for breakfast and a quick nose around a few shops. Afterwards, it was onwards to Roscommon to visit mom in the nursing home as herself hadn’t been for a visit in a while, and she was eager to see my mom again. We brought some delicious pastries from Galway and enjoyed those with a cuppa. After a little while there, it was time for the final hour of driving before reaching our 5-star castle hotel.
We had booked dinner each night in different restaurants within the hotel, as well as massages for tomorrow. Might as well treat ourselves right, as we both work hard, and didn’t manage to get a holiday together this summer due to the mixed commitments of work, and aging parents.
We enjoyed an incredible meal, each ordering different dishes then sharing everything so we could both delight in the fantastic flavours to the fullest extent.
It was as we went back to our room to collect our books for some reading in the drawing room (along with a drink or 2) that herself got the call from her sister; the kind of call you never want to get
“Your dad has been brought to hospital by ambulance, and it’s not looking good”
The most direct route was almost 5 hours, but we got there about 1:30 in the morning, and she was able to be by his side with her sister , for his final day on earth.
Given the mobile phone coverage in the area around the hotel, it’s a blessing she had coverage to recieve that call.
