100 Year Old Beautiful Mexican Silver

Back in 2001 I used to travel to Mexico fairly frequently. I had recently moved back to the US from living in the Caribbean for many years and landed in Tucson, Arizona of all places. The nice thing about living there was the proximity to the border, there were times I would go down to Nogales, Mexico with friend just to get dinner. It was a lot fun! Travel to Acapulco and Cancun was fairly inexpensive too, what beautiful places...

Then in 2006 the drug wars started making travel to Mexico hazardous at best, and I haven't been back since. But still a country I love to visit with so many nice people.

While living in Arizona, I used to buy old Mexican silver coins, there were always a lot available and very cheap at the time. Whenever I got a good deal I would buy up as many as I could and have a huge collection of them. Some are nicer than others as most of these coins were heavily circulated and used for many years. But every now and again you can find a diamond in the rough that hasn't been too badly worn like the one I'm sharing today. It's 100 years old and looks pretty much like new with minimal wear and tear!

This beautiful coin was produced in 1925 during the days of the United Mexican States. It's 72% silver and has such a beautiful design with the golden eagle eating the rattle snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus on the obverse (front) of the coin. The reverse (back) has the Liberty cap often used in coins in new democratic nations symbolizing freedom from oppression. I would put this coin at high grade in about uncirculated condition and is probably worth around $50 or maybe a little more. The actual silver content is worth about $3.71 by silver spot prices at the moment, and 1,450,000 were minted.

These are hard to find in good condition as most were very heavily circulated. It's nice to find a gem like this one, and I got a really good deal at the time. Much less than it's worth today, which is why I have always loved to invest in silver coins!

Today I considered diving into the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It's a great celebration remembering your loved one who have passed on, and once I even was even in Mexico City for the event. It was a blast! But I'll save more about that until closer to Halloween...
