Sunday is still a day in flux for me here on Hive. I still haven't found a dedicated subject for day as of yet since my giveaway was ended, so I'll just have fun filling it in with some ideas I've been kicking around in my head for some time. My favorite coin to collect from the US has always been the Morgan dollar and I have a plethora of them. Many with repeat dates because I happened to get a great deal at one point or another. Today I thought I might share one of my ugly ducklings from the collection.
About the coin:
From numista.com
Not my prettiest Morgan dollar due to the oxidation spots, and the pictures really came out oversaturated due to overcompensating for the dark patches. Still a design I absolutely love, which is why they have been a favorite of mine to collect since I was young. I particularly like the ones from Carson City, Nevada, but they are usually much more expensive. This fine example comes from the mint in Philadelphia and was produced in the last year the Morgan was produced for circulation, 1921.
I recently shared another Morgan from the same year and talked a bit about them. So instead of delving more into the coin itself, I thought it might be interesting to dive into interesting events that occurred during that year. Looking through the history it wasn't a great year. Adolf Hitler became the Führer of the Nazi Party in Germany, the CCP was founded in China, and Bloody Sunday took place in Ireland. That's just the tip of the iceberg... Not exactly a year to be remembered fondly.
But one positive and interesting tidbit I found is that the world's first fast food burger chain was founded that year. That would be the one and only White Castle. To be completely honest, I've never actually been to a White Castle restaurant. But they do sell their frozen sliders at just about every grocery store in the United States.

I don't think I ever realized that White Castle was an actual restaurant before the movie "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle". I never lived anywhere in the country where they had one of these burger joints! Harold & Kumar is a great show incidentally, especially if you are into stoner flicks or are a fan of Neil Patrick Harris... Back to White Castle.
White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas in the US by Walter Anderson. They focused on cleanliness, from stainless steel surfaces to spotless employee uniforms, to inspire customer confidence in food quality. It was a hit, and quickly expanded to new locations. A few years later he sold out to the Ingram family who has run the business to this very day. They have very slowly expanded over the years and under current CEO Lisa Ingram have opened more locations around the US. There is even one in Las Vegas, so maybe next time I'm there I'll have to check it out in person!
I have always enjoyed their frozen sliders, especially when I was younger. So the fresh items must taste great. Anyone ever been to a White Castle before?
That will do it for me this Sunday. I do hope you enjoyed the post and found it interesting. I enjoyed putting this one together, because I learned a lot in the process. It made me realize that even though the world is mess today, it was just as bad or even worse a century ago... Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always, thank you so much for all of your support. I have only been able to grow my account here on Hive thanks to all of you and I appreciate you all. Have a great remainder of the weekend everyone!
