Thursday can be a tough day for me creatively. Maybe I'm just tired from the long week, or maybe I'm just going senile. Either way... I almost didn't create a post today , fortunately, I suddenly found myself having about an hour of absolute free time. I considered taking a nap, but convinced myself to do some creative writing instead.
Today I want to share a coin that I picked up many long years ago, but I don't actually recall where I bought it. It comes from Guatemala, a beautiful country in Central America. What made me think of this coin was a post I saw a few days back by a new member here on Hive @stunningstephie , who happens to live there. Thanks for the inspiration!
This is a rather old coin and to be completely honest, it's not in great shape. Then again it was minted in 1862, so not too bad for being 163 years old! I'm a sucker for old coins... I really like the design on the reverse (back) of the coin. Have a look:

This coin contains 90.3% silver which is a bit odd. I'm not sure why they didn't just leave it at 90%, but I imagine they had a good reason for it. Guatemala has their own mint that was established by the Spanish government in 1733. The coin weighs 6.16 grams, so it's total silver value is just about $6.86. As far as numismatic value it's probably not very expensive as it is extremely worn, I'd guess around $10 on a good day.
It commemorates the first president of Guatemala, Rafael Carrera. He also happened to be the fourth president as well. He was exiled after his first term but then returned to power again several years later. It's an interesting read over on Wikipedia, and he's a very important figure in the history of Guatemala. I have always liked this coin, which is why it's still in my stack. I've always meant to look for one in better condition, but never got around to it. There are always more treasures I wish I could buy than I can ever possibly afford...
