Yesterday I mentioned I was heading to see the doctor. Things took a turn for the interesting and I ended up in the Emergency Room. They decided I would live and gave me some new pills, just what I always wanted. More medication... Oh well, such is life...
I am supposed to take things a bit easy over the next few days, so I won't be creating the longest post I've ever produced. But I did find one of my interesting coins to share with you all today. This coin was a gift from a friend in Chile, back in my days when I was still doing ski instruction down there in the early 1990's.
This is an kind of a cool coin that commemorates the 1978 FIFA World Cup that was hosted in Argentina. On the obverse (front) of the coin they list the cities where the matches were played. This coin will be right up the alley for all of the football/soccer fans out there on Hive. I know there are a whole of you! Have a look:
About the coin:
From numista.com
An interesting fact about this coin is that was not produced in Argentina, it was minted in Santiago, Chile. The Mint there is known as Casa de Moneda de Chile and was founded by the Spanish Government in 1743 to make the transport of plundered silver and gold easier. Although the coin does have some oxidation it's still a really nice coin and made with 90% silver. It may be relatively plain in it's design, but in simplicity there can be beauty!
More than 98,000 were minted so it's not an uncommon coin, and on a good day worth maybe $20. But it's a great momento from the years I spent working in Chile, so it's not leaving my collection any time soon!
1978 FIFA World Cup
By José López Rega and Hilario Vázquez
I have to admit I am not a die hard football/soccer fan. I do know enough about the game to know what's going on for the most part. In 1966 Argentina was chosen to host the 1978 FIFA World Cup. 16 teams had qualified and were set to battle in out in Argentina.
When all was said and done, Argentina nabbed their first ever World Cup championship by defeating he Netherlands 3-1. I can only imagine the massive party that must have filled the streets of Buenos Aires! I know winning the World Cup is a big deal, but to win on your home turf had to make it even more special for the nation of Argentina!
That will wrap up my post for today. I hope you enjoyed the coin and a little background about the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thank you everyone for all of you support, it is greatly appreciated! The weekend is almost here, make it a great day!
