Happy National Pumpkin Day everyone! Every year on October 26 the humble pumpkin is celebrated as a warmup for the upcoming holiday season of Halloween and Thanksgiving. This variety of squash was first domesticated between 7,500 to 9,000 years ago in modern day northern Mexico and into the southern United States. Along with maize and beans it was among the main crops cultivated for consumption in the region
Today pumpkins are used for all sorts of purposes from decorating, making jack-o'-lanterns, and used in cooking all sorts of foods from pies to pumpkin bars. You can even get them in the ever popular spiced pumpkin lattes almost everywhere come fall of each year.
I couldn't resist kicking off the post with this picture, I love the Peanuts cartoons, especially Snoopy!

The most common color of pumpkins you see are orange like these, although they come in multiple colors and sizes. The record for the largest pumpkin was set in 2023 and weighed in at 1,247 kg (2,749 lb)! Now that is one huge pumpkin! And an interesting factoid is that pumpkin that is produced for consumption doesn't come from those orange pumpkins at all. In fact is comes form the Dickinson Pumpkin.

Apparently they have much more flavor than the standard pumpkin which is why the company Libby's chose it to use them in canning, way back in the 1800's. It's still the main one used in consumed pumpkins products until this day!
Now back to Snoopy...
This silver art round is sold yearly by APMEX and is one Troy ounce of pure silver decorated with Snoopy and Woodstock inside of a jack-o'-lantern. It's just so cute that it had to be the header for my post today!

Jack-o'-lanterns

Jack-o'-lanterns are first believed to have originated in England or Ireland and were carved from turnips illuminated with candles. They first made their appearance in the Americas in 1837 among the American English. They have become a major yearly event as part of Halloween with varying faces from the very spooky to the very hilarious. I remember carving these as a kid and continued the tradition with my son as well. They are a lot of fun to make and share every year.
There are even contest for the best jack-o'-lanterns around the country with great prizes for the winners. There is even a world record for the most jack-o'-lanterns on display, Keene, New Hampshire is the current record holder with 30,581 in 2013. That must have been an impressive sight to behold!
That will do it for this National Pumpkin Day, I do hope you enjoyed the post. And why not go out and get a spiced pumpkin latte to celebrate? Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below, and thank you so much for all of your support. It really does mean a lot to me! Have a great Sunday everyone!
