Making Money Playing an Old LEGO Videogame

This has turned out to be a busy week. Normally I like to try to post daily, but with the real world keeping me busy I just haven't had a chance to get much accomplished here on Hive. Today I finally have some free time to sit and put together a post. I have been working on this particular post for a couple of weeks, mostly getting pictures saved so when I finally had the time to write it up it wouldn't be too time consuming. Today I'm diving back into some LEGOs, I was going to share more about the bin of girls LEGOs but I found something even more interesting at Goodwill a couple weeks ago.

But before I jump into the LEGOs, this morning I saw this in the news. A Cheeto was found by someone that resembled the Pokémon Charizard. So rather than eat it they framed it up and put it up for sale in an auction. Someone paid $87,840 for this edible item... People who just have too much money spend it on the strangest things...

As always, I like to start off my LEGO posts with some insanely priced pieces of plastic. This particular mini-figure was given out a the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, and only four were made. Right now you could expect to pay $4,500 for this Superman in a black suit. Yet more people with plenty of money to invest in tiny pieces of plastic! I would rather buy a gold coin personally!

Now for the good stuff. Several years back there was a game released called Skylanders. In this game you had to buy figurines to play the game, so not only did they get to sell the game they also sold the figures. It was smart concept and they made a fortune. They were a big hit and so LEGO decided to make their own version to cash in on this video game trend. They created the game LEGO Dimensions and was released about ten years ago. While browsing at Goodwill I came across a collection of items for the game, but there was no game. Fortunately I remembered that my son had played the game years ago and I still had it with his old Wii U and games. So I gambled paying $60 for the bunch of them, but I saw a couple items that I knew should be valuable. So more of an educated gamble.

This was the first item that really caught my eye. I had never seen Doctor Who in LEGO form and knew it couldn't be very common. So I tested them on the game pad and they all worked, and then priced them. The going rate was $60, so I put it up for sale and within 24 hours it sold at full price. I got lucky on this one, it payed for my entire purchase! The gamble paid off this time, I've had some in the past that didn't work out so well.

The other item I saw was Scooby-Doo along with Shaggy. They aren't real common items in the LEGO world either. After testing them out they were all working. I put it up for sale for $30 and it sold in less that an hour. Now I know I should have asked for more, but it made the whole buy profitable which really was the whole point in the buy in the first place!

Next up I have the Portal 2 pack. As it turns out it wasn't very common either, and commands a price of $40 and up. Luckily all the bases worked in the game, but the mini-figure was damaged. You can see the crack on the side of the torso, that subtracts at least $10 off the price. But that's alright because at this point it's all profit anyway.

Now for some Lord of the Rings, and here I ran into my first major problem. The crossbow construction has a faulty base. I'll need to order a new one to be able to sell it, they come cheap it you know where to shop, around $0.02. Once I replace it the whole bunch might sell for $20 if I'm lucky, it's not nearly as popular as the first two!

And now for Unikitty. I might get $8 if I'm lucky on these, Lego City sets just aren't very popular. But it's better than nothing and I'll have to wait for a buyer who's lookin to collect it.

It also came with the portal to connect to the Wii U and the starter characters. As you can see it's really dusty, I'm going to have to clean the whole thing up and count the parts before putting it up for sale. Not a huge value, I might get $15 in used condition. It is an odd collection of starter characters with Gandalf, Batman, Wyldstyle, and the Batmobile. But I got to have a lot of fun playing a video game and making money in the process. Not a bad way to make a few extra dollars! IMG_20250306_130154429.jpg

That will wrap up my Lego Dimensions post for the day. This was a real gamble because if none of the bases had worked I would probably had lost money because replacing character bases on the expensive sets isn't cheap. I'm glad I took the chance though, because it really was a lot of fun! I would be cautious to buy one of these unless you have some idea what sets are more valuable, I easily could have lost money on this one. Thanks for taking the time to look over my post, I hope you enjoyed it. I learned that you can make money from Cheetos as well, so the day wasn't a loss!

Have a great day everyone! I appreciate all of your support!
