The last few days there has been a lot of news covering the hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean name Erin. It's intensified quickly into a major storm, fortunately it poses little risk to land except in the form of very heavy surf. It appears it will be taking a classic hook around the US east coast and head back out to sea. However, that could be bad news for Bermuda, because it's in the middle of the Atlantic!
The mention of Bermuda got me thinking of the one time I did actually visit the islands. As I am still alive the Bermuda Triangle didn't swallow me up! They are beautiful islands! It's made up of 181 small islands, not all inhabited however. I picked up a few silver coins when I was there, kind of an old habit that I never have managed to break. Once you have the silver stacker bug it never goes away! I shared one quite some time back, so I tracked down some images of another few I have stored away.
Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory so their coinage will always have the current British Monarch. I always have liked the ones that have the young image of Queen Elizabeth II as you will see in this coin. However, I think the reverse (back) of the coin is the design I prefer. Have a look:
About the coin
From numista.com
I shared another coin from Bermuda produced the same year back in March. This one isn't quite as nice, but still really nice for it's age. The coin is only 50% silver, but for the mid 1960's that really is too bad. Silver prices were climbing quickly in that decade and silver was pulled from most coins worldwide by the end of the decade. The current bullion value in the coin is about $13.83, however, the numismatic value is probably around $23. Not too bad especially considering I paid very little for it at the time. Although that was many long years ago...
If you look at the coat of arms of Bermuda you will see the ship wreck of the Sea Venture. The ill fated ship was headed for Virginia when caught up in a tropical storm in 1609. It wrecked on the reefs of Bermuda, and was the only reason the island became colonized. I wrote a more extensive history about it in a post about a year and a half ago if you are interested here is the link.
That will do it for my post for this Monday halfway through August. This year is passing by so quickly isn't it? I hope you enjoyed the post and feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thanks for taking the time to check it out and for all of your support. It really is deeply appreciated. Have a great week everyone!
