Ducklings and hive hub b-days

Hello, Hive! It’s been a while since my last post, so I’m going to give you a recap of the last two weeks.

34 days ago, me and my dad went on a trip with our neighbors to their property. We arrived at Duck Willow, and I immediately went up to the chicken and duck enclosure. I was looking around, and I saw a mummy sitting on eggs.

I have wanted a baby duck for ages, so I asked my neighbor Shad if we could use his incubator, and he said, “Sure! Look around for duck eggs, but don’t look under the mummy duck.” So I looked around and only found one duck egg.

He said he had some more in storage and that we would start the incubator when we got home. So I took the one I found, and we went home. When we got there, we started the incubator and put the duck eggs in.

On week two, we decided to candle the eggs. It looked good—at least 14 would be good. At least that’s what we thought.

I checked on it next week, and he told me that his son and daughter had unplugged it for more than 12 hours. We candled the eggs. The next day, only 10 were alive.

I came over every day and checked on them for three days. Then Shad and his two kids had to go away, so they gave me keys and told me to feed the cat and check the incubator every day.

I did for three days, and then on the fourth week day 28 me and my friend came a little late and decided to candle the eggs. I opened the incubator and heard, “Chirp chirp chirp!”

I looked inside, and there was a beautiful yellow baby duck. We stopped candling the eggs and left for the night. I was super excited.

I went in the morning at 10 AM and checked on the baby duck and gave it some water. I checked the other eggs, and three more had cracks in them. One of them—you could put your ear up to it and hear, “Chirp chirp chirp!”

Shad and his two kids came home that day, and 30 minutes after they came home, another one hatched. They set up their baby chick house and put them in.

I expected there to be three more chicks in the morning. I was wrong. There were four, and we put them in the baby chick house. There were six babies in total.

Shad’s kids, Lillian and Gabe, were treating the baby ducks like toys. They were chasing them around. Gabe, the older brother, grabbed one of the ducks upside down and stuck its head in water, saying, “Are you thirsty, baby duck? Are you thirsty?”

I told him to stop because it was hurting the duck, so he stopped.

The next day, Lillian picked up the first duck to hatch and was running around with it. She dropped the baby duck and splat—baby duck dead.

Now there are only five baby ducks.

Two days later, three baby ducks hatched, and it was a good day for it, ’cause it was July 1—my dad‘s birthday.

Later that day, we went up and celebrated my dad’s birthday with the Hive Hub community. We were all having a great time. PHOTO-2025-07-02-22-26-32.jpeg

Now, four days later, I am posting this post. I’m sorry I’m late. I was busy hanging out with my friends.
