Hey everyone,
The first Hive Community Activity by @snook, has the theme of rocks. I wanted to contribute a few ideas for my fellow Game Masters, so here are four new, low-magic items that can add a bit of mystery and utility to your TTRPG campaigns.
The Witness Stone
This item looks like a simple, smooth gray river stone, worn down by time. Its magic is subtle: if you hold the stone and concentrate, you can hear a faint, one-sentence echo of the most emotionally charged event that occurred near it in the last 24 hours.
- Adventure Hook: The players find a Witness Stone clutched in the hand of a murder victim. The only echo they can hear is a desperate whisper: "Not you... I thought we were partners!"
The Hearthstone
This fist-sized, porous rock looks like a piece of dark volcanic pumice and is constantly, inexplicably warm to the touch. Once per day, if you press it against a flammable material and speak a command word, it will instantly flare with intense heat for a second, igniting a perfect, smoke-free fire.
- Adventure Hook: An explorer, frozen to death high in the mountains, has a Hearthstone and a journal. The journal speaks of a hidden "Sunken Forge" where these stones were created, and mentions that this particular Hearthstone is the key to rekindling it.
The Pebble of Deceit
This is the perfect tool for a spy or con artist. It's a small, unremarkable gray stone that can, with concentration, take on the appearance of another small object of similar size, such as a gold coin, an ornate key, or a precious gem. The illusion is purely visual and ends if the item is physically inspected. It can be used three times per day.
- Adventure Hook: The players are hired to retrieve a stolen signet ring from a corrupt merchant. They are given a Pebble of Deceit and must create a situation where they can swap the pebble (disguised as the ring) for the real one, giving them just enough time to get away.
The Skipping Stone of Whispers
This is a perfectly flat, smooth disc of slate, ideal for skipping across water. Before you throw it, you can whisper a message of up to ten words into the stone. The first person to pick up the stone after it stops skipping will hear your whispered message in their mind. The magic fades after the first person touches it.
- Adventure Hook: The players must use one of these stones to send a critical warning across a wide, monster-infested lake to a watchtower on the other side, but they only get one shot to make the throw and ensure it's found by the right person.
I hope you can find a use for these in your games! #hivecommunityactivity
