Topic of the Month: Weekly Prizes Are Back!

Hello friends. Thank you for your continued participation in The Ink Well. As many of you know, we switch things up from time to time to keep our community fresh, avoid admin burnout, and improve upon our curation methods.

This month we are pleased to announce that we will again be rewarding a weekly prize of 5 Hive to one of our favorite stories of the week!

As you know, we now post one weekly prompt, and you are welcome to write a creative nonfiction or fictional story from that prompt. We are enjoying seeing the fun results and how writers choose to use the prompts — either to tell stories from their own life experiences (creative nonfiction) or stories from their imagination (fiction).

Here are a few notes and reminders: * You do not need to use the actual words from the prompt in your story. Just be sure to add your link to a comment under the prompt post. It's also helpful to use the tag #inkwellprompt. * You must use the correct tags to be considered for curation — #fiction for fictional stories and #creativenonfiction for true stories from your own life experience. * Can you write a short story and post it in The Ink Well if it is not based on a prompt? Yes, of course. We welcome all short stories, whether or not they were inspired by the weekly prompt. * We will curate up to one story per author per week. You may post more than one story in The Ink Well each week, but typically only one will be a candidate for curation. This helps our admin team to manage our time and (we hope) encourages writers to take time to produce high-quality stories and edit their work before posting. * As always, we do not guarantee curation. This is a benefit we offer regularly to members in good standing in the community who write stories with care. Curation is also based on the time and availability of our admin team, which is always in flux based on health, travel, and other factors.

That's it for updates!

As always, if you have questions, please visit the "ask-theinkwell" channel in our Discord server.

Writing Tips: Fuel for the Imagination

Imagination is flighty — sometimes we feel inspired, and sometimes we don't! How do you keep your imagination fresh?

Here are a few tips! * Sit down to write with a clear mind. Perhaps drink a cup of tea, relax and daydream. A cluttered, busy mind that is working on solving the problems of the day will be challenged to come up with good story ideas! * Think of the prompt (or any idea you may have in mind) and just start writing without thinking about where the story is going. You can always edit later. Taking this step can get your story in motion anytime you feel stuck. * Remember that reading stories is one of the best ways to be inspired to write your own. Read books. Read stories from other writers in The Ink Well. Find online story magazines. Seeing how other authors create a setting, develop their characters and write dialogue can be very inspiring! * Look at pictures of people and ask yourself: What is their story? Perhaps behind that wry smile is a dark secret, a troubled heart, or a deep wish for something to happen that would make life better. Everyone has a story!

Happy writing!
