Curator comment:

This story from zain-ab001 is very poignant. A girl's brother goes missing at a mall, and she and her mother become distraught and distant from one another. When the girl becomes pregnant a few years later, it brings them together.

In the Time Before

Curator comment:

@lailawrites takes on the challenging task of describing a deceased teacher from the notes she left behind. The teacher's classroom tells the story of the teacher's life. That the teacher is dead remains a secret to her students. The narrator of this story must find a way to break the news, while at the same trying not to break hearts.

@popurri

I Don't Want to Die

Curator comment:

@popurri writes an intense work of fiction that combines in the protagonist a deep depression, due to the mourning of a dead son, the migration of her two children, and abandonment by her husband. The protagonist is a nurse, yet she is not alarmed by her death wishes. The climax of this intense story comes when an earthquake occurs in the city and the protagonist must decide whether to let herself die or fight for her life. Seeing other people in need of help, her spirit is reborn.

Nicely done, writers! We normally pick three writers to showcase, but there were so many great stories last week that we had to showcase a few more. You guys rock!!

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Ticket"

A ticket can be an amazing thing. It can provide a story character with entrance to a thrilling amusement park ride, the rock concert of a lifetime, a train ride to somewhere magical, or a bus ride to a clinic for a frightening procedure. A ticket can also be issued by a police officer for driving too fast or driving through a stop signal.

In short, there are endless possibilities for stories to be told involving a ticket. How will you create drama and capture the interest of readers with a story about a ticket? Maybe your character has a ticket to a very exciting event, but it blows out the window. Or perhaps your character is standing next to another person at a grocery store when the person opens a candy bar containing a golden ticket, which will give them a grand prize (like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Or maybe your character must go to see a special relative before they pass on from this life... but they don't have the funds to afford the trip.

What will you come up with? Tell us a story!

Good luck. Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:

• Great first lines
• Good settings
• Well-developed characters
• Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
• A conflict that intrigues the reader
• A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
• And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors — please use the free Grammarly tool for grammar and spelling checks (and not AI writing or rephrasing tools for revising)

6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
8. Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.

As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind.
