Author Shout-outs
As always, we received some excellent stories for last week's prompt. Here are a few of the stories that received high marks from our curators.
@ghost-art
Curator comment:
@ghost-art writes a crime drama that is as much a character sketch as it is a mystery. A notorious thief, retired, is blamed for a heist. He realizes he has been framed and teams up with his nemesis, the dogged police agent Trent. Together these two plot to capture the true thieves. The author has taken great care to work out the complicated scheme that leads to the apprehension of the culprits. A clean, well-plotted story, as every crime drama should be.
@riya2020
Curator comment:
@riya2020 writes a story that flows with the ease of a natural storyteller. Her protagonist challenges orthodoxy--established beliefs--and in doing so places herself at risk. The gamble she takes ends up not only correcting a wrong, but also results in vanquishing an evil force that had brought great harm to a community. This is a wonderful story, one that can be read for the charm of its words and the value of its message.
@zerah
Curator comment:
@zerah writes a convincing story about newlyweds who are very much in love. The narrative centers on the cooking of plantains. The author offers banter as the newlyweds flirt with each. The plantains are burned because of the distraction, but nothing could disappoint the couple. This author uses dialog expertly, creates a vivid scene, and keeps the pace of the story lively to correspond with the pace of flirtatious banter.
@artofkylin
Curator comment:
@artofkylin has a fantastic (and fantastical) imagination and solid writing skills. This fiction about a potion experiment gone wrong is creative and shows character development superpowers.
Nicely done, writers!
Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week
This week's prompt is: "Choices"
We all make choices every single day. For this week's prompt, we invite you to write about characters at the point of decision, when they will choose to make a good choice or a bad choice — one that serves them and their true goals, or one that is simply about satisfying the urge of them moment.
Choices come in all sizes, don't they? A person might be suffering indecision about whether to eat a greasy take-out meal or a healthy salad. Or the choice might be between forgiving someone else or telling them they are no longer a friend and no longer welcome. Or the choice could be about a major financial investment, a decision to join a protest march when there are police forces using smoke bombs and other deterrents, or between going to school and skipping school if there is another enticing possibility.
The decision between right and wrong, and between healthy choices or self-indulgent and unhealthy choices is sometimes depicted as a person with a devil on one shouler and an angel on the other — as if the person may hear both of them whispering in their ear about which choice they should make, and must decide who to listen to. (Hence the featured image for this post!)
Tell us a story where where your story characters are struggling with choices, as well as the ultimate decision and its after-effects.
We look forward to reading your stories.
Good luck. Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:
- Great first lines
- Good settings
- Well-developed characters
- Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
- A conflict that intrigues the reader
- A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
- And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors — please use the free Grammarly tool for grammar and spelling checks (and not AI writing or rephrasing tools for revising)
You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of storytelling tips.

Writing Prompt Guidelines:
- See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
- Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
- Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell.
- Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
- Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
- Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
- Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
- Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.
Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.) And do NOT use AI tools to write or manipulate your stories. You must provide your own unique content.
