Over the weekend, I have been having severe back pain spinning down my hips, and I have been wondering what was wrong with me for the sudden back pain. After reading making consultations from people with similar experiences, I realized that the cause of the pain I have been struggling with was due to not having a proper working space for my only hustle.
Almost every day, I use my laptop on the table in my living room which is much lower than the couch. I tend to bend over the table putting too much force on my Spinal cord and lower back making it hurt. I never realized that it was the positioning of my laptop on the table that was causing the back pains I have been facing. It all began a three ago when my electricity was disconnected and I have to make a temporary connection from my neighbor's flat into my sitting room where I had to plug the laptop for use until I have my electricity reconnected.
I have been working with the laptop on the table in my bedroom which is much higher than the table in the living room. But, with the disconnection of my electricity, I had to make the temporary working space in my living room. I never knew that bending over to work on a lower table can cause severe back pains in me.
When I was wondering for two weeks what the back pain could be, the last thing that came into my mind was that the pain might be caused by the way I have been sitting and using the laptop. The first thought about the problem was an underlying fever with pain being the only symptom. I treated myself for the fever but the pain did not go away. I was scared it was arthritis at one point, which for my age would be quite unusual.
Actually, the problem is not the fever or arthritis. The only reason is that I have been sitting on the couch all the time and have been using the laptop on the table in the living room hence the bending over the table.
I shouldn't be having back pain at my age. I am 45 years old and I should not be having back pain, right? I have found out that if I put the laptop on the higher table in my bedroom with the chair that I use for it, I wouldn't get the back pains. But, due to the lack of electricity, I have to keep using the laptop on the table in my living room.
While it was hard to live with my back pain, as I had to continue using the laptop on the table in the living room, I have now decided to stop using the laptop until I get my electricity reconnected and start using it on the table in my bedroom again.
More than that, I have chosen to set up a work area that is suitable for me and that should be something like a desk, a chair, and power cables that will allow me to sit on the chair and comfortably employ my laptop instead of the way I have been doing on the table in the living room or my bedroom.
For the last two weeks, I have had this back pain and fever, I have been on medication and I have taken the medicine regularly. But I decided to stop taking the drugs because they make me dizzy and sleep. Having figured out the cause of the pain, I believe that the healing process will be quicker if I refrain from using the laptop in that position.
Let me show you the detrimental side of a sitting posture in the case of the spinal cord and the lower back.
Basil Otis White, an American acupuncturist, in his book "Spine", recommended that one should always sit at a least distance of 40cm or more from the bed to lessen the stress on the spine.
As a result of a person sitting upright with the buttocks on a chair or couch, the lower back will not be able to relax. The muscles in the lower back are thus in more constant tension. The muscles are therefore not used to their full capacity.
There are people who knowingly use laptops on their laps, I am aware of that, but still, it is of no importance. The pain happens because the lower back is not able to be relaxed, which makes the position of sitting on a lap, with the lower back too much to keep in tension.
All in all, I want to encourage people to seriously think about the problem of sitting properly on a chair or a couch so that we can remain mobile. At least have a proper working space, which will prevent pain in the spine and back, while using a laptop on a desk.
In case of back problems as in my case, now you are aware of the cause and have the appropriate solution to stop the pain and bring back the spine to its original state.
