We have all encountered or heard about some people who seem to have every lucky break in life. It is quite a hassle to see such things happening while you are on the sidelines watching. Yet the biggest part that the public is unaware of is that the so-called "luck" which we define as random is not quite as unconnected with the reality as it sounds.
One can liken luck to a garden. Most people just waite for the flowers to magically grow. But the clever ones are getting down in the dirt, turning it, sowing the seed and altering the environment so the plants grow. They recognize that luck isn’t simply fate, it’s something that they actively cultivate.
Smart individuals think differently about luck. And they recognize the four kinds luck that can change anyone's path to success if they know them.
The first kind of luck is "Hustle Luck." It's is the easiest to consider among the four but perhaps most difficult to implement. It's simply a matter of math; the more you try, the greater the likelihood of success. Dart throwing game is a typical example to illustrate the hustle luck.If a person was allowed only one throw, he would have one chance to hit the bull's eye. However, if you were to throw 100 darts, chances would be raised considerably. It is similar to the principle of hustle luck in business and life.
When going in this kind of luck, you don't try and then quit. You got to do those 100 cold calls. You get to pitch those 50 investors. You get to try out a few business ideas at a time. Each shot is simply one additional lottery ticket, and they're buying by each trial.
The next is the "Skill Luck." This is one of the interesting kind of luck. It's purely based on an individual skills. A professional athlete isn't lucky to win the race. That's skill luck in action. The same is true of business and investing. The smart businessman can perceive an opportunity that is invisible to others. Through decades of practice and experience, they have trained themselves to spot opportunities other people don't see at all. It does not occur by chance, it is a product of consciously acquired proficiency.
Then we have 'Reputation Luck.' This is the strongest kind of luck. It's a snowball effect. When you consistently deliver value and are dependable, opportunities begin to come to you, rather than you pursuing them. The phone rings with deal regularly. The inbox fills with partnership offers. Your network begins grinding even when you're asleep.
And finally we have the 'Blind Luck'. This is the events of pure chance that no one can foresee or even influence. They come from out of the blue. The post you never thought could be seen by only a few people but goes viral by luck. The accidental meeting that alters the course of your life. This is a rare type of luck, but it can happen to anyone.
Smart people especially the wealthy understand that 75% of luck is within their control, and they take advantage of it. They are not sitting around waiting for dumb luck to happen. Rather, they put their energy into the three types luck they can control; hustle, skill, and reputation.
They hustle, opening up more possibility through sheer effort. They hone their craft, cultivating the sensibility to spot and capture opportunity that eludes others. They establish and protect their reputations, understanding that trust compounds like interest into boundless possibility.
The reality is that luck is not some mysterious energy that capriciously delivers success to the favored. It's somewhat more akin to physical muscle that you develop with regular exercise. The more you do, the more it develops.
So here’s the way forward: Quit waiting for luck to show up. Start creating it instead. Twice as many shots at whatever you are after. Put the hours in. Establish a record to make. These initiatives won’t guarantee victory, but they do increase the chances of finding it.
The rich are not lucky because fate smiled upon them. They are lucky, in the sense that they figured out that luck is something you create, not something you wait for. Now that you know this secret, it’s time you begin to generate your own luck.
